Job Title: Operation Theatre (OT) Technician
Department: Operation Theatre / Surgical Services
Reports To: OT In-Charge / Nursing Superintendent / Surgeon
Job Summary:
The OT Technician is responsible for assisting surgeons and nursing staff during surgical procedures by preparing and maintaining the operation theatre, ensuring all surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are sterile and available. The technician plays a vital role in maintaining aseptic conditions and supporting the surgical team for smooth and safe operations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Pre-Operative Duties:
Prepare the operation theatre before surgery (cleaning, sterilization, and arrangement).
Check and ensure availability and functionality of all surgical instruments and equipment (e.g., lights, suction, cautery, anesthesia machine).
Arrange necessary materials and instruments as per the surgery list and surgeon’s requirement.
Assist in positioning and preparing the patient for surgery.
Ensure sterile environment and follow aseptic techniques strictly.
2. Intra-Operative Duties:
Assist the surgical team during operations by passing instruments and materials.
Handle instruments carefully and maintain count of sponges, needles, and instruments.
Operate and monitor OT equipment (e.g., suction machine, cautery, microscope).
Maintain smooth coordination between surgeon, anesthetist, and nursing staff.
Ensure adherence to infection control protocols throughout the procedure.
3. Post-Operative Duties:
Clean and sterilize instruments and equipment after surgery.
Prepare OT for the next procedure.
Dispose of bio-medical waste as per hospital protocols.
Maintain accurate records of surgeries, instrument usage, and sterilization logs.
Assist in transferring patients safely to recovery or ICU post-surgery.
4. Equipment Maintenance:
Perform routine checks and minor maintenance of OT instruments and machines.
Report malfunctioning or damage immediately to the biomedical department.
5. Documentation:
Maintain surgical case records, instrument inventory, and sterilization documentation.
Ensure proper labeling and documentation of surgical specimens.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
Education: Diploma or Degree in OT Technology (DOTT / BSc in OT Technology).
Experience: 0–2 years (freshers can apply; experience preferred in multi-specialty or tertiary care hospitals).
Technical Skills: Knowledge of surgical instruments, sterilization techniques, and OT protocols.
Soft Skills: Good communication, teamwork, attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure.
Other Requirements: Willingness to work in shifts, weekends, and emergencies.
Work Environment:
Hospital Operation Theatres (General, Orthopedic, ENT, Gynecology, Neurosurgery, etc.).
Involves standing for long hours, exposure to sterile environments, and emergency preparedness.
Key Competencies:
