Job Purpose : To be part of a team providing 24-hour medical cover for all routine medical care and response to consultant requests. Immediate first line resuscitation to patients, visitors or staff member as required. To assist in the management of patients and provide back-up support to consultant Duties and Responsibilities A professional approach must be adopted with patients, staff and visitors. To comply with all hospital policies and procedures and conform to all Infection control and health & safety regulations for the hospital. Be aware of the fire evacuation procedure. To clerk and assess urgent/emergency admissions and to contact the consultant to identify immediate treatment pathways. To record in the patient’s notes the appropriate patient examinations, communication or procedures. All entries to be signed dated and timed. To receive a hand-over report from the alternative RMO/senior nurse when commencing duty and to take two rounds each morning and evening to enable and establish consultant communication. To complete mandatory training – Fire, H&S, Infection Control, Manual Handling, Child Protection and Vulnerable Adult, Information Governance, preferably within the first month of employment. Duties To liaise with the senior nurse regularly at least every 3-4 hours to check on patient progress, or more frequently if a patient’s condition necessitates. To liaise with the Infection Control Doctor with regards to serious infection management, especially if blood cultures are obtained. To be fully aware of local antibiotic prescribing guidance. To take blood samples from patients as requested and undertake arterial blood sampling as necessary. This will include phlebotomy as required. To discuss medication on discharge with patients and write a discharge summary’s. · The RMO is not allowed to self-prescribe. · To administer intravenous medications / therapy if required. The RMO should be able to interpret Consultant and nursing staff requests.
