Job Description

Role & responsibilities

  • Plan and execute daily cut-to-length orders on industrial bandsaw machines; create basic nesting to minimize scrap, choose appropriate blades, and set feed/speed for dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
  • Supervise safe loading/unloading and in-yard movement of bars, plates, and bundles using EOT cranes; enforce rigging standards, hand signals, pre-use checklists, and bay discipline.
  • Maintain stock locations and traceability by heat/lot numbers; verify markings, tally lengths/weights, and update issue/receipt records to prevent grade mix-ups.
  • Coordinate dispatch readiness: final inspections, bundling/strapping, tagging/labels, documentation handover, and on-time truck turnarounds with basic gate coordination.
  • Own first-line maintenance for bandsaws and cranes: lubrication, coolant/fluids, blade changes, filter checks, cleaning routines; log abnormalities and coordinate vendors for breakdowns.
  • Track production KPIs: cut accuracy, cycle time, scrap rate, rework, equipment uptime, and order adherence; review variances and implement corrective actions.
  • Implement shopfloor safety practices: PPE usage, safe lifting limits, housekeeping, aisle management, spill control, and immediate escalation of unsafe conditions.
  • Train and mentor helpers/trainees on machine basics, rigging dos/donts, measurement tools, and 5S; conduct quick start-of-shift huddles for plan, risks, and allocation.
  • Collaborate with sales/coordination teams on feasibility, lead times, cutting allowances, and partial dispatches; flag constraints proactively.
  • Complete simple ERP/Excel updates for daily production logs, inventory movements, and cut plans; maintain checklists, service logs, and incident reports.
  • Support vendor interactions: consumables (blades, coolants, slings) replenishment, preventive service scheduling, and quality feedback to suppliers.
  • Uphold fixed working hours, timely payouts process compliance, and disciplined attendance while meeting production and safety targets.
  • Undertake short local runs for company work using the provided two-wheeler when required (documents, small parts, vendor follow-ups).
  • Location: On-site in Kathwada GIDC, Ahmedabad; department: Operations (Steel Yard & Cutting).

Preferred candidate profile

  • Experience track (preferred): 37 years in steel service centers, forging/auto machine shops, or fabrication yards with hands-on bandsaw cutting and EOT crane supervision.
  • Trainee track (also welcome): Freshers or career shifters with strong mechanical aptitude, willingness to learn on the floor, and long-term commitment; full on-the-job training provided.
  • Education: ITI Fitter/Machinist/Turner or Diploma in Mechanical preferred; non-ITI candidates considered if practical skills and learning mindset are evident.
  • Technical competence: Understanding of feed/speed, blade selection, coolant use, and basic maintenance for bandsaws; ability to read tape, vernier, and basic drawings/tolerances.
  • Material handling: Familiarity with rigging, slings/shackles, load balance, and crane signaling; exposure to EOT crane operations is an advantage (training available for trainees).
  • Metallurgy awareness: Ability to differentiate common alloy/carbon steel grades by markings/MTCs; discipline to maintain heat/lot traceability and prevent grade mix-ups.
  • Systems: Comfort with checklists and simple ERP/Excel entries for production, inventory, and dispatch records; documentation accuracy and habit of timely updates.
  • Safety-first attitude: Consistent PPE use, adherence to SOPs, and proactive hazard reporting; clean work habits and 5S orientation.
  • Soft skills: Steady temperament, clear communication with shopfloor teams and drivers, practical problem-solving, and reliability under schedule pressure.
  • Work style: Hands-on supervisor who can both operate and guide; ownership of outcomes, punctuality, and readiness to mentor juniors.
  • Mobility: Comfortable with short local travel on the company-provided two-wheeler for official tasks when needed.
