Role & responsibilities

Role Summary

The Head Engineering for the Captive Power Plant is responsible for leading all engineering, maintenance, reliability, and project execution activities for the power plant. This role ensures uninterrupted and efficient power generation, adherence to safety and statutory norms, and continuous improvement in plant reliability, efficiency, and cost optimization.

Key Responsibilities

1. Plant Engineering & Technical Management

  • Lead engineering functions across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Ensure optimal performance of boilers, turbines, generators, WHRB/AFBC/CFBC systems (as applicable).
  • Monitor plant KPIs including heat rate, auxiliary power consumption, efficiency, and PLF.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings, designs, and modifications.

2. Operations Support & Reliability Management

  • Work closely with operations to maintain high availability and reliability.
  • Identify chronic issues and implement root-cause analysis (RCA) and corrective actions.
  • Drive predictive, preventive, and condition-based maintenance strategies.
  • Ensure zero unplanned breakdowns through reliability-centered maintenance (RCM).

3. Maintenance Management

  • Oversee mechanical/electrical/instrumentation maintenance programs.
  • Develop annual maintenance plans including major overhauls, turbine inspections, and boiler shutdowns.
  • Manage spare parts planning, vendor development, and AMC coordination.
  • Ensure timely execution of shutdown maintenance within planned timelines and budgets.

4. Project Engineering & CAPEX

  • Lead engineering inputs for expansion, modernization, energy efficiency, and CAPEX projects.
  • Evaluate technical specifications for new equipment, upgrades, and retrofits.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, contractors, and commissioning activities.

5. Regulatory Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with statutory norms: CEA, CERC, pollution control board, safety norms, any factory regulations.
  • Implement robust safety practices for all engineering and maintenance tasks.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.

6. Energy Management & Optimization

  • Identify energy-saving initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs.
  • Optimize fuel mix, heat rate, water consumption, and auxiliary power usage.
  • Evaluate technological improvements for long-term sustainability and reliability.

7. Budgeting & Cost Management

  • Prepare and control engineering and maintenance budgets.
  • Monitor cost performance and implement cost-saving measures.
  • Review vendor contracts, procurement decisions, and inventory optimization.

8. Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and develop engineering, maintenance, and project teams across disciplines.
  • Provide technical guidance and build competency across departments.
  • Create a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and operational excellence.
