Job Summary:
The Optical Line System NOC Engineer is responsible for monitoring, operating, and maintaining the optical transport network, ensuring high availability, optimal performance, and rapid restoration of services. This role involves real-time fault detection, troubleshooting, and coordination with field teams and vendors for optical transport systems such as DWDM, OTN, and ROADM technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
Network Monitoring & Operations
Monitor optical line system performance and alarms through NMS (Network Management Systems), EMS (Element Management Systems), and OSS tools.
Ensure continuous health of DWDM/OTN/ROADM optical networks.
Proactively identify and respond to network degradation, alarms, and faults.
1. Incident Management
Perform initial triage, root cause isolation, and escalation of network issues.
Coordinate with field engineers, vendor TACs, and service providers for fault resolution.
Maintain accurate incident logs and track resolution progress.
2. Maintenance & Change Management
Support planned maintenance, upgrades, and software patching of optical transport equipment.
Validate service impact prior to and after changes.
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for network changes and outage handling.
3. Performance & Reporting
Analyze optical power levels, OSNR, and other key metrics.
Generate daily/weekly/monthly network performance reports.
Recommend improvements for network stability and efficiency.
4. Documentation & Compliance
Maintain detailed network documentation, topology diagrams, and equipment inventory.
Ensure operational compliance with company and regulatory standards.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Education: Bachelors degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, Electrical, or related engineering field (or equivalent experience).
Experience: 24 years of experience in optical transport network operations or similar NOC environment.
1.Technical Skills:
Knowledge of DWDM/OTN/ROADM systems from vendors like Ciena, Infinera, Nokia, Huawei, or Cisco.
In Depth knowledge on Ciena 6500 RLS and Waveservers.
Familiarity with optical parameters (Power levels, OSNR, BER, Chromatic Dispersion, PMD).
Hands-on experience with NMS/EMS systems and network monitoring tools (e.g., Ciena OneControl, Infinera DNA-M, Nokia 1350 OMS, etc.).
Understanding of Layer 12 network protocols and optical fiber infrastructure.
Basic IP networking knowledge (SNMP, TCP/IP) is an advantage.
2. Soft Skills:
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent communication and coordination abilities.
Ability to work in a 24x7 rotating shift environment.
Attention to detail and ability to follow procedures under pressure.
Preferred Certifications (Optional):
Vendor certifications (Ciena Optical Communications, Infinera Certified Engineer, etc.)
CCNA/CCNP (Optical or Service Provider track)
ITIL Foundation Certification
