Job Title:

Design engineer Research and Development

Mission of job:

Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 12-15 years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge and experience in air brake systems and wheel end

    system and its components and validation techniques.
  • Experience in the commercial vehicle industry.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and vehicle validation techniques.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, conduct, and coordinate a broad range of complex engineering technical assignments.
  • Conducts and participates in design reviews of new and revised components.
  • Development of engineering documents including design specification, DFMEA, DVP&R, Test Requests, and product support literature.
  • Work within a stage-gate PLM process to release new and revised component designs. Document completion of APSG deliverables.
  • Develop test plans and track through a DVP&R. Coordinate activities with Test Engineering for test setup, component validation and data collection.
  • Develop prototype samples to be used for testing.
  • Support field troubleshooting. Perform root-cause failure analysis on tested parts and field returns.
  • Drive problem solving analysis using a structured approach.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects and drive for results.
  • Benchmarking study
  • Release drawings through the Global Change Management (GCM) system and the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) process.
  • Conduct field failure analysis and implement corrective actions and design improvements.
  • Engage in discussions and supplier visits to provide technical guidance and meet customer requirements.
  • Tolerance stack-up & GD&T
  • Part drawing release & support to Vendor development in part development
  • Technical feasibility
  • Define spare kits and lead the design and development of aftermarket products.
  • Application knowledge of truck/trailer air braking or pneumatic systems.
  • Communicate with CoC and global teams to exchange design and technical knowledge and manage design releases.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as iron castings, gears, powder metal, springs, sheet metal, tooling, rubber parts, plastic parts, heat treatment and machining
  • Support Global Team for leadership report out on Engineering/Technical activities (Sprint Reviews and other ‘Scrum’ events to keep alignment)

Skills:

  • Engineering tools: DFMEA, DVP&R, GD&T, Tolerance stack-ups, FEA, 8D, DFA, and DOE.
  • Possesses good oral and written communication and is comfortable communicating with customers, suppliers, internal partners, and company leadership.
  • Proficiency in technical English is required.
  • Good project management skills with the ability to complete assigned tasks on-time.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills in a team environment; experience with the 8D process.
  • Analyze test results and draw appropriate conclusions from a design perspective.
  • Pro/E experience (3D modeling & drawing creation), detailed tolerance stack-ups, and GD&T skills are desired.
  • PC skills: Microsoft Office Suite (MS Project and Minitab are a plus).
  • Knowledge of the material properties of a variety of steels used for machined and stamped components.
  • Able to work in a cross-functional team including international members.
  • A self-starter who makes independent decisions, takes ownership, defines a path to achieve the desired goal, and delivers quality results in an environment with multiple and conflicting priorities (including interfacing with sales, marketing, engineering, and company leadership).
  • Anticipates problems; recognizes and eliminates barriers.
  • Able to manage time and to prioritize efforts with other team members to achieve goals.
  • Experience with meeting scheduled launch deadlines.
  • Experience with Six Sigma/statistical analysis tools. Experience with Design of Experiments.
  • Knowledge of material science
