Debt Recovery Officer

Responsibilities Contact debtors via phone, email, or in person to discuss and recover overdue payments. Negotiate repayment plans or restructure debt schedules to facilitate payment. Maintain up-to-date and accurate records of communication and repayment agreements. Follow legal procedures and comply with laws regulating debt collection. Collaborate with internal departments including legal and finance for unresolved cases or escalations. Prepare and submit detailed reports on debt recovery activities and performance metrics. Follow up consistently on payment commitments and initiate legal action if required. Provide customers with information regarding loan terms, penalties, and consequences of delayed payments. Required Skills and AbilitiesStrong communication and negotiation skills capable of handling difficult conversations professionally and empathetically. Good interpersonal skills to build trust and maintain positive debtor relationships. Ability to manage multiple accounts, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines efficiently. Knowledge of debt collection laws, financial products, and accounting basics. Proficiency in using CRM and debt collection software for documentations and follow-ups. Problem-solving ability to devise practical repayment solutions and handle disputes effectively. Persistence and resilience to work under pressure and handle rejection professionally. Attention to ethical standards, ensuring respectful treatment of debtors aligned with organizational values. Qualifications and Experience Minimum educational requirement typically ranges from high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration, or related fields. Entry-level agents often have 1–2 years experience in customer service or telecalling roles; advanced agents may have more substantial experience in debt recovery. Specialized training or certification related to debt collection practices is a plus and can enhance job performance and career growth. Knowledge of regulatory frameworks like the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) or local legal equivalents is strongly recommended.
