Job Description

Role & responsibilities

Patient Care:

Explain procedures to patients and answer their questions
Prepare patients for exams (e.g., applying gel, positioning)
Monitor patients during procedures

Imaging Duties:

Operate ultrasound equipment to capture diagnostic images of soft tissues, organs, and blood flow
Perform various types of scans (e.g., abdominal, obstetric, cardiac, vascular)
Adjust equipment settings for optimal image quality
Record anatomical, pathological, and/or physiological data for diagnosis

Documentation & Communication:

Analyze preliminary images and provide findings to physicians
Maintain patient records and imaging logs
Collaborate with radiologists and other healthcare professionals

Maintenance and Compliance:

Ensure cleanliness and proper function of ultrasound equipment
Follow safety protocols and infection control procedures
Comply with privacy laws

Preferred candidate profile

Education:

Associates Degree
in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or a related field (typically 2 years).
Alternatively, a
Bachelors Degree
in a related health science field followed by a 1-year certificate program in sonography.
Accredited programs
(e.g., CAAHEP-accredited) are preferred.

Certification (often required or preferred):

ARDMS
(American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) offers credentials such as:

RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer)
RVT (Registered Vascular Technologist)
RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer)

ARRT-Sonography
(American Registry of Radiologic Technologists – optional path)
State Licensure
