- Drive the integration of the Fluence BESS control system into the Testfield environment: development of logic and control schemes for the BESS to meet TSO and Customer requirements.
- Support the product development engineering of utility scale energy storage solutions, including the development, implementation and testing of controls applications.
- Develop standardized test procedures and execute tests (FAT / SAT) to reduce commissioning time, and perform testing, including involvement in hands on lab testing during evaluations of prototype systems.
- Develop and maintain documentation of existing Controls infrastructure including hardware, applications, protocols, communication links and system backup and recovery strategies.
- Work with Deployment engineers to find solutions to problems as they arise during validation of a system, in all controls-related subjects.
- Keep current with all Company products, developments, and projects as they apply to the Controls network at both site and enterprise levels.
- Maintain strict management of change control procedures and documentation.
- Remain current on industry best practices and updated technology to ensure the company is provided world-class Controls services.
- Support company strategy and provide relevant reporting and updates to Company leadership as needed.
- Develop and recommend performance management and feedback to current Controls technical support KPI's.
- Executing tasks related to Fluence safety KPIs
- Travel throughout EMEA
Skill Requirements
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant Software programming / Industrial control systems experience, preferably with a power utility or related industry.
- Embedded & PLC Engineering (Must?have):
- Design and implementation of deterministic, resource?aware code on constrained devices:
- Memory management: static/dynamic allocation strategies, stack/heap sizing, fragmentation mitigation, ring buffers, DMA?aware I/O.
- Real?time performance: scheduling, ISR vs. task design, latency/jitter analysis, deadline compliance, watchdogs, graceful degradation.
- Scalability & maintainability: modular architectures, well?defined interfaces, versioned drivers, and reusable function blocks.
- Hands on with at least one major PLC/RTU ecosystem (e.g., Siemens S7/TIA Portal, CODESYS/TwinCAT, SEL RTAC).
- Industrial Communications (Must-have):
- Deep working knowledge of SCADA/EMS protocols and stacks:
- IEC?60870?5?101/103/104, IEC?61850 (MMS; GOOSE a plus), DNP3, Modbus (RTU/TCP), and solid grasp of TCP/UDP/IP fundamentals.
- Able to use and, when needed, implement or extend communication stacks (encoders/decoders, parsers, finite?state machines, timers/retry/sequence logic, link/application layers), including conformance, robustness, and performance testing.
- Proficient with protocol analysis and troubleshooting tools (Wireshark, vendor conformance test sets; time sync with PTP/NTP).
- Power systems and Controls context:
- Working knowledge of electricity transmission/distribution, SCADA/EMS/DMS, and substation integration concepts (RTUs/PLCs, IEDs, HMIs).
- Understanding of grid behaviors relevant to storage/inverter controls (set?points, limits, interlocks, fail?safe states).
- Mindset and collaboration:

- German / other language skills desired
- Nice-to-have:
- Experience with OPC UA/DA, MQTT, or ICS gateways.
- Experience with HIL/SIL test setups and test management tools.
