Yuwa India is seeking a Career Counselor to join our team and foster a positive, challenging, inclusive learning environment for girls and young women in our programmes. Responsibilities will include restructuring Yuwa's systems for preparing our participants' for their future goals through building girls' awareness of future opportunities and career pathways, identifying quality universities and vocational programmes that could be a good match for our participants, individual mentorship and counseling, assistance with submission of applications, and developing and implementing life-skills curriculum focused on girls ages 15 - 20. 


Yuwa’s atmosphere is one of collaboration, respect, and mutual learning.


Candidates must be excited by the mission of creating a low-cost, world-class educational experience for girls in villages from lower caste and tribal backgrounds. 


About Yuwa

Yuwa is an internationally acclaimed non-governmental organization that uses education and sport to put girls powerfully in charge of their own futures. Yuwa is registered as a Trust in India, and has been working in the same community since 2009. Yuwa is based in villages in the Ranchi district of Jharkhand, where girls are especially at risk of dropping out of school, child marriage, gender-related violence, and human trafficking. Through the creation of football teams, girls gain leadership skills and confidence, continue their education, and are less likely to be forced into child marriage. Here, teamwork is a powerful force to promote health, education and improved livelihoods among the most important agents of change—young women.


Almost all of Yuwa’s external representation is done by the girls themselves, including numerous TEDx talks.

About Yuwa School


Yuwa School for girls began in June 2015 in Hutup village, Jharkhand. The vision of our school is: Every girl’s future in her own hands. Our mission is to enable students to reach their full academic potential, develop critical and creative thinking skills, and become compassionate, empowered leaders in their communities. Yuwa School is English Medium and follows CBSE curriculum for standards 1 - 8, and NIOS curriculum for standards 9 - 12.


80% of Yuwa School graduates have been offered full scholarships to competitive universities after graduating from 12th standard, including Harvard University, Ashoka University, Azim Premji University, Krea University, Washington and Lee University, and more. 


Our current campus supports 115 students and 11 full-time teachers. The school will run on a leased campus in Hutup village until building of our permanent and residential campus will be completed. 


Career Counselor description:


The Career Counselor role at Yuwa is a newly created position which will be focused on preparing our participants' for their future goals by enabling them to identify and secure quality post-graduation opportunities. The Career Counselor would primarily work with two groups of young women in Yuwa:


  • Approximately 40 girls who are enrolled in Yuwa School’s 9th - 12th standard 
  • Approximately 150 girls between the ages of 15 - 20 who participate in Yuwa’s football and life-skills programmes, but attend other local schools 


While the Career Counselor will often conduct their work independently, they will also collaborate closely with Yuwa’s existing teams already focused on career counseling: a committee of teachers and administrators at Yuwa School, as well as the Head of Yuwa’s Life-Skills Programmes. 


Ideally, we would also like the Career Counselor to lead the Yuwa School team in enabling our students to cross the digital divide and incorporate more technology education into our curriculum. Digital literacy an important aspect of Career Counseling that is often a gap for our students. 


Career Counselor Responsibilities:


  • Build girls' awareness of future opportunities and career pathways
  • Identify quality universities, vocational programmes, and scholarships that could be a good match for our participants
  • Provide individual mentorship and counseling
  • Assist participants with submission of applications
  • Develop and implement a life-skills curriculum focused on future planning for girls ages 15 - 20
  • Lead the Career Counseling Committee at Yuwa School to maximize our existing resources 
  • Spearhead a focus on digital literacy at Yuwa, especially among secondary level students 


Qualifications

  • University graduate
  • Experience in the field of education, ideally in career/college counseling or school administration
  • Experience mentoring or counseling students 
  • Experience leading and managing a team of people
  • Positive recommendation from past employers or professors


Required Skills

  • Fluent in English 
  • Strong organizational, executive, and record keeping skills 
  • Proactive and solution-oriented 
  • Flexibility – able to work independently and also take direction as needed 
  • Resourceful with limited infrastructure 
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build and maintain relationships with fellow teachers, students and parents
  • Curiosity: demonstrated desire to continue learning
  • Sense of urgency: desire to make the most of your time 


Starting Date

  • The starting date for the Career Counselor would ideally be July/August 2025, but is negotiable based the candidate’s previous obligations.
