Assistant Design Manager

Role Overview

The Assistant Manager - Mechanical Design is responsible for leading the design and development of mechanical solutions for material handling equipment and systems. This role plays a key part in delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions for complex projects. The position requires strong technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and the ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely and successful project execution.

You will provide technical guidance to design engineers, review and approve designs, and act as a key technical interface between clients, project managers, manufacturing, and site teams.

Key Responsibilities

Design Leadership & Concept Development

• Lead conceptual design and detailed engineering of material handling equipment such as cranes, hoists, conveyors, and related systems.
  
• Collaborate with project managers and clients to define project scope, technical requirements, and design objectives.
  
• Translate customer requirements into robust, innovative, and practical mechanical design solutions.
  
• Review and validate design concepts prepared by team members.
  

CAD Modelling, Engineering & Analysis

• Oversee the preparation of 2D and 3D CAD models, layouts, and detailed drawings using tools such as SolidEdge, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
  
• Perform and review engineering calculations, stress analysis, simulations, and load assessments to ensure design integrity and safety.
  
• Ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, assembly, installation, and maintenance.
  
• Approve technical drawings, BOMs, and engineering documentation.
  

Material Selection & Cost Optimization

• Select appropriate materials based on performance requirements, standards, cost targets, and availability.
  
• Work closely with procurement and vendors to evaluate and approve critical components and materials.
  
• Drive design optimization initiatives aimed at cost reduction without compromising quality and safety.
  

Compliance, Standards & Safety

• Ensure all designs comply with applicable national and international standards, codes, and safety regulations related to material handling equipment.
  
• Lead design risk assessments and ensure implementation of safety-by-design principles.
  
• Stay updated on industry trends, standards, and technological advancements.
  

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Coordinate with electrical, controls, production, quality, and installation teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs.
  
• Act as a technical point of contact for internal teams and external stakeholders.
  
• Support project managers with technical inputs for planning, execution, and issue resolution.
  

Team Guidance & Mentoring

• Guide, mentor, and review the work of junior and mid-level design engineers.
  
• Support skill development and promote best engineering practices within the team.
  
• Participate in technical decision-making and design reviews.
  

Continuous Improvement & Innovation

• Identify opportunities for design standardization, process improvement, and productivity enhancement.
  
• Incorporate feedback from manufacturing, commissioning, and field service teams to improve future designs.
  
• Contribute to the development of design guidelines, checklists, and standard solutions.
