Role Overview The Assistant Manager - Mechanical Design is responsible for leading the design and development of mechanical solutions for material handling equipment and systems. This role plays a key part in delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions for complex projects. The position requires strong technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and the ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely and successful project execution. You will provide technical guidance to design engineers, review and approve designs, and act as a key technical interface between clients, project managers, manufacturing, and site teams. Key Responsibilities Design Leadership & Concept Development Lead conceptual design and detailed engineering of material handling equipment such as cranes, hoists, conveyors, and related systems. Collaborate with project managers and clients to define project scope, technical requirements, and design objectives. Translate customer requirements into robust, innovative, and practical mechanical design solutions. Review and validate design concepts prepared by team members. CAD Modelling, Engineering & Analysis Oversee the preparation of 2D and 3D CAD models, layouts, and detailed drawings using tools such as SolidEdge, AutoCAD, or equivalent. Perform and review engineering calculations, stress analysis, simulations, and load assessments to ensure design integrity and safety. Ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, assembly, installation, and maintenance. Approve technical drawings, BOMs, and engineering documentation. Material Selection & Cost Optimization Select appropriate materials based on performance requirements, standards, cost targets, and availability. Work closely with procurement and vendors to evaluate and approve critical components and materials. Drive design optimization initiatives aimed at cost reduction without compromising quality and safety. Compliance, Standards & Safety Ensure all designs comply with applicable national and international standards, codes, and safety regulations related to material handling equipment. Lead design risk assessments and ensure implementation of safety-by-design principles. Stay updated on industry trends, standards, and technological advancements. Cross-Functional Collaboration Coordinate with electrical, controls, production, quality, and installation teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs. Act as a technical point of contact for internal teams and external stakeholders. Support project managers with technical inputs for planning, execution, and issue resolution. Team Guidance & Mentoring Guide, mentor, and review the work of junior and mid-level design engineers. Support skill development and promote best engineering practices within the team. Participate in technical decision-making and design reviews. Continuous Improvement & Innovation Identify opportunities for design standardization, process improvement, and productivity enhancement. Incorporate feedback from manufacturing, commissioning, and field service teams to improve future designs. Contribute to the development of design guidelines, checklists, and standard solutions.
