1. BOM Review & RFQ Initiation
Review the prototype BOM received from the Product Design (R&D) Team.
Identify parts requiring development and send RFQs to short listed prototype suppliers.
Obtain cost and timeline quotes for parts, tooling (if applicable), and any special processes.
Evaluate and compare supplier quotations; submit for review to HOD / SCM teams.
Discuss feasibility points with suppliers and conclude jointly with the R&D team.
Finalize supplier and submit cost inputs to the relevant stakeholders for approval.
2. Supplier Identification and Feasibility Analysis
Identify suitable prototype part suppliers based on capability, lead time, and past experience.
Share design drawings and receive supplier feedback on manufacturability (DFM), material availability, and process capabilities.
Assess feasibility for quick development, including any special process or machining needs.
Evaluate supplier readiness for prototype timeline adherence and flexibility in iterations.
Get supplier alignment and freeze development plan with R&D / SCM.
3. Prototype Tooling (if required) and Part Development
Coordinate PR release and share all commercial and technical inputs with Purchase / SCM for PO issuance.
If tooling is involved, track tool manufacturing progress as per the development plan.
Visit toolmakers and/or part suppliers to monitor progress and provide support for resolving technical challenges.
Ensure tool trials and part development are aligned with design intent and project timelines.
Conduct sample inspections and coordinate with R&D for part evaluation, fitment trials, and feedback resolution.
Update and maintain records of part modifications and development iterations for traceability.
4. Prototype Part Quality Review & Approval
Organize dimensional inspection and visual quality checks of the prototype parts.
Prepare and submit sample inspection reports along with parts to the R&D and QA teams.
Coordinate with QA and R&D for feedback on fitment, function, or any deviation.
Implement corrective actions, if needed, and re-develop or modify the parts accordingly.
Once approved, ensure documentation of part version, deviation reports, and design compliance.
5. Pre-Production Handover & Lessons Learned
Support limited batch build or field trial with approved prototype parts.
Share build feedback with the R&D, Quality, and Process Engineering teams.
Document learnings from prototype development including part behavior, process challenges, and improvement suggestions for mass production transition.
Participate in design review and DFM/ DFA feedback loops to enhance future designs and manufacturability.
6. Additional Responsibilities
Maintain close coordination with cross-functional teams (PM, R&D, SCM and QA).
Ensure adherence to project timelines, technical accuracy, and cost targets for prototype parts.
Support internal build schedules and ensure timely delivery of prototype parts for testing and validation phases.
Contribute actively to continuous improvement in prototype development processes.
