Job Description

Job Title: SMPS Design Engineer UPS / Power Conversion Systems

  • Design, develop, and validate

    Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS)

    circuits and

    power conversion stages

    for

    UPS and energy conversion systems

    , covering a range of topologies such as

    Flyback, Forward, Half/Full Bridge, LLC, Phase-Shifted Full Bridge, and PFC/Vienna Rectifier.

  • Execute

    power estimation, sizing, and loss calculation

    for rectifier, charger, DC-DC, and inverter sections based on system requirements, load profile, and thermal constraints.
  • Perform

    detailed power stage design calculations

    including magnetic design, semiconductor device selection, snubber networks, and thermal design ensuring high efficiency and reliability for required power ratings.
  • Develop and verify

    AC-DC, DC-DC, and DC-AC converter topologies

    used in

    single-phase and three-phase UPS systems

    , with focus on scalability, efficiency, and protection features.
  • Select components (MOSFETs, IGBTs, SiC/GaN devices, magnetics, capacitors, etc.) considering

    efficiency, derating, thermal performance, and cost trade-offs.

  • Design

    control and feedback loops

    using analog and digital PWM controllers (e.g.,

    UC384x, TL431, UCC28019, UCC3895

    , or

    DSP/MCU-based control platforms

    ).
  • Conduct

    board bring-up, hardware testing, and debugging

    using oscilloscopes, current probes, and power analyzers to validate converter performance under real load conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with

    EMI/EMC, safety, and reliability standards

    applicable to industrial and commercial UPS systems.
  • Collaborate closely with

    firmware, mechanical, and PCB layout teams

    to ensure seamless integration of power and control sections.
  • Create and maintain

    design documentation, validation reports, test plans, and power estimation spreadsheets.

  • Lead

    design reviews, root-cause analysis, and continuous design optimisation

    to improve product performance and manufacturability.
  • Contribute to

    system-level architecture definition

    , translating UPS performance specifications into

    power design requirements and topology selection.

Technical Skills Required:

  • Strong hands-on experience in

    SMPS and power converter design (50 W5 kW)

    for

    UPS, inverter, and charger applications.

  • Deep understanding of

    UPS power architecture

    including charger, rectifier, DC link, inverter, and static bypass sections.
  • Proficiency in

    isolated and non-isolated converter topologies

    , including

    LLC resonant, interleaved PFC, and 3-phase PWM rectifiers.

  • Expertise in

    gate driver design

    ,

    magnetics design

    , and

    loop compensation

    for stable control.
  • Familiarity with

    power semiconductor technologies

    (Si, SiC, GaN) and their associated gate driver requirements.
  • Experience using

    simulation and design tools

    such as

    PSIM, LTspice, PLECS, and MATLAB Simulink

    for loss, thermal, and control analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of

    power estimation, thermal modelling, and derating practices

    for reliable operation.
  • Working knowledge of

    safety and EMI/EMC compliance standards

    (IEC/EN 61000, CISPR, UL).
  • Hands-on proficiency with

    test and validation equipment

    : DSO, power analyser, LCR meter, spectrum analyser, and thermal camera.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors/Masters degree in

    Power Electronics / Electrical / Electronic Engineering.

  • Proven experience in

    industrial UPS, inverter, or charger product design and validation.

  • Familiarity with

    digital control

    of power converters using

    DSPs or MCUs (TI C2000, STM32, etc.)

    .
  • Knowledge of

    PCB layout design

    for high-power circuits, including

    creepage, clearance, and thermal design rules.

  • Exposure to

    SiC/GaN-based topologies

    and

    modular UPS architectures

    for high-efficiency systems.
  • Experience with

    system-level power estimation, load behaviour analysis, and performance optimisation.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and

    debugging ability

    with attention to detail.
  • Capable of working

    independently

    from concept through prototype validation.
  • Effective in

    cross-functional collaboration

    with firmware, thermal, and system teams.
  • Excellent

    documentation, communication, and presentation

    skills.
