Senior Lead of Engineering Job Description

Job Purpose

GT Technologies ( GT ) is a fast-growing consulting firm in the US renewable energy sector. The firm currently specializes in providing a range of engineering and analytical services. These services encompass a broad spectrum of project development activities, including GIS prospecting, PV/BESS/EV system design, project finance modeling, asset management/operations, software development, and tailored market intelligence. Our diverse client portfolio includes several Fortune 500 solar energy developers, leading clean energy investment firms, and innovative cleantech software companies, and we are looking to scale the business significantly over the next five years.

We are in search of a Senior Lead of Engineering who possesses a deep understanding of the renewable energy landscape, combined with a strong background in engineering design, project management, and development. This individual will report directly to the CEO and play a pivotal role in leading our engineering teams, overseeing the execution of technical projects, and ensuring the highest standards of quality and innovation are met. Key responsibilities will entail guiding the engineering process (i.e. scope of work) from concept/pilots to delivery with a focus on design engineering, quality system, and technical training, ultimately driving continuous improvement in our technical capabilities and processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Technical Project Management:

Supervise the daily operations of the engineering team, ensuring timely delivery of projects and client deliverables. This includes effective communication, coordination, and detailed technical reviews with client teams to ensure that GT consistently meets or exceeds quality standards. Manage complex rooftop and ground-mounted solar system design workflows from conception to completion, which involves coordinating PV/BESS layouts, Single Line Diagrams (SLD)/Three Line Diagrams (3LD), and conducting energy/power flow simulation.
  • Technical Expertise and Tool Proficiency:

Demonstrate and apply in-depth knowledge of solar design principles including DC and AC side engineering from PV string sizing to MV/HV generator substation layouts. Leverage simulation tools such as Helioscope, PVsyst, PVCAD, PVCASE, and AutoCAD with a hands-on focus. Ensure the engineering team is proficient in these tools to optimize solar project designs for efficiency, reliability, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Standards:

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other relevant AHJ standards and regulations. Conduct detailed equipment and component sizing in accordance with IEEE/NEC standards for various solar system components. This includes PV Arrays, Inverters, Lightning Arresters, Disconnectors, Power Transformers, Battery Module and Chargers, Reclosers, Current Transformer (CT) Voltage Transformer (VT) assemblies, and other switchyard components. Customize this for various US utilities such as Con Edison, National Grid, or SCE.
  • Client Engagement and Business Development:

Actively participate in business development activities, including proposal development, client presentations, and pilots. Work closely with U.S. clients to understand their needs and provide customized, innovative solar energy solutions across states.
  • Training and Development:

Lead the training and professional development of new and existing engineering team members. Ensure the team is equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles, including proficiency in specific design tools and understanding of regulatory codes.
  • Quality Assurance and Control:

Establish and enforce quality control standards and processes to ensure all engineering work meets the highest standards with a focus on standardization. Conduct regular reviews of designs against work-flow documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:

Work with other departments, such as project management, finance, and marketing, to ensure a cohesive approach to project development and company growth. Promote a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • MTech or master s degree in engineering, preferably in Electrical, Mechanical, or Renewable Energy Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the solar energy industry, with at least 5 years in a leadership or management role overseeing engineering design teams.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing and delivering solar energy projects, from initial design through to implementation with an EPC focus.
  • Experience working with U.S. clients, with a deep understanding of the U.S. solar market and regulatory environment is highly desired.
  • Proficiency in solar design and simulation software such as Helioscope, PVsyst, PVCAD, PVCASE, and AutoCAD.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the US National Electrical Code (NEC) and IEEE standards.
  • Familiarity with project management software and tools, with the ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to mentor, motivate, and guide engineering teams towards achieving business objectives.
  • Excellent business acumen with experience in business development activities, including client engagement, proposal development, and contract negotiations.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to anticipate and solve problems proactively.
  • Relevant certifications such as NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) PV Installation Professional or similar are highly regarded.
