Roles & Responsibilities

  • A storm water manager in Chennai Metropolitan would be responsible for overseeing the planning, design, and implementation of storm water drainage systems, ensuring effective management of surface runoff, and mitigating flooding risks. This includes tasks like desilting drains, maintaining infrastructure, and coordinating with various departments for project implementation.
  • Developing and implementing storm water management plans, including both macro and micro drainage systems, for the Chennai Metropolitan area.
  • Overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of storm water drains, canals, and related infrastructure, including desilting operations and cleaning of inlet chambers.
  • Managing storm water drainage projects, ensuring timely completion and adherence to environmental and safety regulations.
  • Collaborating with various departments like the Public Works Department (PWD), Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) for effective storm water management.
  • Ensuring adherence to environmental regulations and implementing Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) during construction and maintenance activities.
  • Interacting with NGOs, government departments, and academic institutions to disseminate information and promote best practices related to storm water management.
  • Evaluating the performance of storm water drainage systems, identifying areas of improvement, and recommending solutions to mitigate flooding and other issues.
  • Organizing and supervising the desilting of storm water drains and canals, ensuring removal of silt and debris, and proper disposal of waste.
  • Inspecting and maintaining the structural integrity of storm water drains, culverts, and other related infrastructure.
  • Developing and implementing strategies to mitigate the impact of flooding, including flood forecasting and early warning systems.
  • Ensuring that storm water runoff does not adversely affect water quality and implementing measures to prevent pollution.
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field is typically required.
  • Several years of experience in storm water management, drainage design, or related fields is usually preferred.
