Role Purpose:

Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ) operations

Key Responsibilities:

1. CDQ Operations Management

• Ensure smooth, continuous, and safe operation of the CDQ unit.
  
• Monitor coke quenching cycle parameters (coke temperature, cooling medium circulation, chamber pressure).
  
• Ensure uniform coke cooling to meet quality requirements of SMS/Blast Furnace.
  
• Optimize waste heat recovery for power generation (if WHRB is integrated).
  
• Minimize moisture pick-up and maintain coke CSR/CRI values.
  

2. Coke Quality & Productivity

• Ensure quenching process maintains required coke strength and quality.
  
• Coordinate with Coke Oven operations team to align quenching with coking cycle.
  
• Monitor coke size, moisture, temperature, and physical quality post-quenching.
  
• Troubleshoot quality deviations and take corrective actions.
  

3. Equipment & Process Control

• Operate and maintain CDQ chamber, waste heat recovery boilers, fans, conveyors, and gas handling system.
  
• Ensure reliability of cooling media (nitrogen/recirculated gas) systems.
  
• Implement automation & instrumentation control to maintain stable CDQ operation.
  
• Conduct root cause failure analysis (RCFA) for major breakdowns.
  

4. Maintenance & Reliability

• Plan preventive, predictive, and shutdown maintenance for CDQ and associated systems.
  
• Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation teams for execution.
  
• Ensure availability of critical spares and AMC management.
  
• Drive improvements in CDQ lining, chamber life, and fan/boiler efficiency.
  

5. Energy Recovery & Environment Management

• Maximize utilization of waste heat recovery for captive power generation.
  
• Ensure compliance with emission norms (dust, SOx, NOx, CO).
  
• Minimize fugitive emissions, coke spillage, and particulate matter discharge.
  
• Implement energy-saving and waste minimization initiatives in CDQ operation.
  

6. Safety & Statutory Compliance

• Ensure strict compliance with Factories Act, Pollution Control Board, and statutory norms.
  
• Implement SOPs and safety protocols for CDQ chamber entry, high-temperature handling, and confined space.
  
• Drive zero-incident culture with continuous monitoring of unsafe acts/conditions.
  
• Regular safety training and mock drills for operating teams.
  

7. People Leadership & Development

• Lead a team of engineers, shift-in-charges, supervisors, and operators.
  
• Train the workforce in modern CDQ practices, safe handling, and troubleshooting.
  
• Foster teamwork, discipline, and continuous improvement culture.
  
• Identify skill gaps and implement structured training programs.
  

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

• CDQ availability (%) and reliability.
  
• Coke moisture content (%), Coke CSR/CRI post-quenching.
  
• Power generated from Waste Heat Recovery (kWh/t of coke).
  
• Specific energy consumption of CDQ system.
  
• Emission levels vs statutory norms.
  
• Breakdown frequency, MTBF/MTTR.
  
• Safety performance (Zero LTI, near-miss reporting).
  
• Cost of CDQ operation per ton of coke.
  

Qualification & Experience:

• B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgy / Mechanical / Chemical / Electrical Engineering.
  
• 12–18 years of experience in Coke Oven/CDQ operations (preferably vertical non-recovery ovens).
  
• Strong knowledge of CDQ process, waste heat recovery, emission control, and coke quality management.
  
• Hands-on experience in handling shutdowns, capital repairs, and compliance audits.

• Knowledge of ERP/SAP for production, maintenance, and cost tracking.

• Strong communication and cross-functional coordination skills (with Coke Oven, Power Plant, and SMS/Blast Furnace teams).
