Quality leader who sets the automation vision and executes it across teams using Playwright (TypeScript), strong API automation, Git, GitLab CI/CD, and Jira/Xray.
What you'll do
- Set and deliver the automation strategy & roadmap (12-24 months): test pyramid balance, shift-left approach, non-functional checks in CI, and clear business outcomes, objectives and key results.
- Identify opportunities for automation,
- Define and enforce standards for Playwright/TypeScript (project structure, fixtures, page objects, assertions), API testing (schema/contract rules, backward-compatibility), Git (branch policies), and CI (required jobs, smoke packs).
- Establish governance: ownership/RACI for frameworks and high-risk flows, change control for shared libraries, cross-team reviews, and quality gates in GitLab (lint/typecheck, unit/contract/E2E thresholds, flaky-test quarantine).
- Codify policies: test data, secrets management for test runs, release readiness/sign-off criteria in Jira/Xray, pipeline SLOs and escalation routes.
- Architect the platform: evolve the Playwright/TypeScript framework, sharding/parallelism, caching, trace/HAR capture, non-functional and cost/performance optimisation in GitLab CI.
- Make quality measurable: build failure taxonomy, dashboards, and risk-based coverage in Xray/Jira to give exec-level release signals.
- Enable the org: mentor engineers, run internal workshops, lead design reviews, and align with client Product/Platform/Security on testability and observability.Qualifications
Must-haves
- 7+ years leading test automation at scale with at least one front-end test automation tool such as Playwright + TypeScript and advanced API automation (REST, schema/contract testing).
- Proven record setting strategy and owning a roadmap, and instituting standards, governance, and policies adopted across multiple teams.
- Strong GitLab CI/CD (pipelines-as-code, templates, dynamic environments, test sharding, caching/artifacts, performance & cost tuning).
- Strong Git practices (branching strategy, protected branches, review workflows) and repo design (mono/multirepo).
- Deep Jira/Xray usage for requirement coverage, risk-based planning, dashboards, and release readiness reporting.
- Mobile Test Automation.
- Influences across Product/Platform/Security; drives data-backed decisions and clear go/no-go criteria.
- Excellent communication skills. Can clearly explain test automation strategies, results, and risks to technical and business stakeholders.
- Collaborate effectively with developers, product owners, and leadership.
- Can lead of team of other automation testers.
Should-haves
- Visual regression, accessibility (axe), performance and basic security checks integrated into CI; observability for test runs (logs/metrics/traces).
- Compliance awareness for test data policies and audit evidence in Xray.
- Contract-first/API-driven architectures, robust test data orchestration, and environment management.
- Experience reducing E2E runtime/flakiness via deterministic data, stable selectors, and pragmatic retries/timeouts.
- Good SQL.
- Computer Science related degree or similar.
- k6 or similar for basic performance smoke checks within CI.
Success indicators (12 months)
- Org-wide adherence to standards/policies.
- Trusted release signals via Jira/Xray dashboards; fewer escaped defects/sev-1 regressions.
- Documented governance (RACI, ADRs, exemption workflow) with declining exception rate and healthy quality KPIs.
- Increased automation coverage month on month.
