Role of a Quality Engineer in Residential Construction (5 Years Experience)

A Quality Engineer (QE) in residential construction ensures that all construction activities, materials, and completed works meet the required standards, specifications, and regulatory codes. With five years of experience, the QE typically operates with moderate independence, supervises QA/QC processes on-site, and collaborates closely with contractors, consultants, and project managers.

Key Responsibilities

1. Quality Planning & Documentation

• Develop and implement project-specific

  Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) plans

  .
• Prepare

  Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs)

  , checklists, and method statements.
• Maintain and update quality documentation, including NCRs, MIRs, WIRs, RFI logs, and QA/QC reports.

2. Materials Inspection & Verification

• Verify incoming materials for compliance with project specifications and approved submittals.
• Coordinate with suppliers and third-party labs for

  material testing

  (concrete, steel, soil, etc.).
• Maintain material traceability and certification records.

3. Site Inspection & Compliance

• Conduct daily inspections of structural, architectural, and MEP works as applicable.
• Ensure construction activities follow building codes, drawings, and safety standards.
• Assist in

  preparing work for client/consultant inspections

  and ensure closure of comments.

4. Non-Conformance Management

• Identify and document

  non-conformances (NCRs)

  and deviations.
• Coordinate with site teams to implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Follow up to ensure timely closure of NCRs and maintain related documentation.

5. Coordination and Communication

• Liaise with project managers, consultants, contractors, and subcontractors on quality matters.
• Attend project meetings to provide updates on quality issues and progress.
• Support the site team in understanding and implementing quality standards.

6. Testing & Commissioning Support

• Monitor and verify quality of concrete pours, waterproofing works, block/brick works, finishes, and MEP installations.
• Witness and document

  site tests

  (slump test, compaction test, cube test, pressure test, etc.).
• Assist in snagging, de-snagging, and final handover inspections.

7. Process Improvement

• Identify recurrent quality issues and recommend process improvements.
• Contribute to

  root-cause analysis

  to prevent future defects.
• Promote awareness of quality standards among site teams through training or toolbox talks.

8. Handover & Close-out

• Prepare quality-related documentation for project handover:
• As-built drawings review
• Test reports
• O&M manuals
• Completion certificates
• Ensure final inspections comply with client/consultant requirements.

Additional Responsibilities (Common for 5+ Years Experience)

• Mentor junior QA/QC engineers and site inspectors.
• Provide input during design reviews for constructability and quality considerations.
• Support audits (internal/external) and ISO compliance if applicable.
