Job Description

We are seeking an Intern or Postdoctoral Researcher to investigate process–structure–property relationships in aerospace alloys, with emphasis on titanium and nickel systems. You will perform microstructural characterization (Optical, SEM, EBSD), conduct heat-treatment experiments in in-house facilities under expert supervision, and help build quantitative, usable correlations using physics-based and data-driven approaches. This role collaborates with a diverse, global team and requires clear communication of research findings.

Site Overview

Established in 2000, the John F. Welch Technology Center (JFWTC) in Bengaluru is our multidisciplinary research and engineering center. Engineers and scientists at JFWTC have contributed to hundreds of aviation patents, pioneering breakthroughs in engine technologies, advanced materials, and additive manufacturing.

Role Summary: We are seeking an Intern or Postdoctoral Researcher to investigate process–structure–property relationships in aerospace alloys, with emphasis on titanium and nickel systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute experimental plans to study Processing Structure Property relationships in aerospace alloys under mentorship.

  • Conduct metallography and microstructural characterization using Optical microscopy, SEM, and EBSD; support sample prep, acquisition, and analysis.

  • Perform heat treatments in in-house facilities under expert supervision; document conditions, safety checks, and outcomes.

  • Assist in developing quantitative Processing Structure Property correlations by integrating physics-based models with data-driven/statistical analyses; contribute to data curation and visualization.

  • Support mechanical behavior interpretation by collaborating with testing teams (e.g., tensile, creep, fatigue) and linking results to microstructure.

  • Communicate progress and findings through concise reports, presentations, and regular updates to a global team.

  • Maintain high standards in lab safety, data integrity, and documentation.

Ideal candidate:

Should have experience in in Processing Structure Property correlations for engineering alloys, with preference for titanium and nickel systems.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Current MS or PhD student or Postdoc in Metallurgy or Materials Science

  • Demonstrated research experience in Processing Structure Property correlations for engineering alloys, with preference for titanium and nickel systems.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with Optical, SEM, and EBSD (including sample preparation, acquisition, and analysis).

  • Experience with heat-treatment process design Aerospace alloys.

  • Experience integrating physics-based modeling with data-driven methods (e.g., regression, DoE, feature engineering).

  • Excellent communication skills and a record of teamwork in cross-functional settings.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with mechanical testing methods (tensile, creep, fatigue) and relevant standards.

  • Working knowledge of image analysis tools (e.g., ImageJ/Fiji).

  • Exposure to alloy development and thermomechanical processing

  • Humble: respectful, receptive, agile, eager to learn

  • Transparent: shares critical information, speaks with candor, contributes constructively

  • Focused: quick learner, strategically prioritizes work, committed

  • Leadership ability: strong communicator, decision-maker, collaborative

  • Problem solver: analytical-minded, challenges existing processes, critical thinker.
