Job Description

Key Responsibilities: Blood Collection: Drawing blood from patients using venipuncture or other approved techniques.  Patient Preparation: Explaining the procedure to patients, addressing concerns, and ensuring their comfort and safety.  Sample Handling: Properly labeling blood collection tubes, storing samples according to protocol, and preparing them for transportation to the laboratory.  Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate patient records related to blood draws, including test orders, sample information, and any adverse reactions.  Equipment Maintenance: Ensuring that all equipment used for blood collection is properly maintained, sanitized, and readily available.  Safety Compliance: Adhering to all safety and infection control protocols to prevent contamination and exposure.  Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Effectively communicating with patients, explaining procedures, and addressing any questions or concerns.  Teamwork: Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, such as nurses, physicians, and laboratory personnel.  Educational and Certification Requirements: High School Diploma or Equivalent: A high school diploma or GED is typically required as a minimum educational foundation.  Phlebotomy Training Program: Completion of a recognized phlebotomy training program is often a prerequisite.  Phlebotomy Certification: Certification from a recognized body, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), is often preferred or required.  State Licensure: Some states may require phlebotomists to be licensed in the state of practice.  Additional Skills and Qualities: Attention to Detail: Accuracy in labeling samples, maintaining patient records, and following procedures is crucial.  Organizational Skills: Managing multiple tasks, prioritizing work, and keeping track of samples and records is essential.  Computer Literacy: Proficiency in using electronic health record systems and other relevant software.  Stress Management: The ability to remain calm and professional under pressure, especially when dealing with anxious or apprehensive patients.
