Job Summary:

The NICU Staff Nurse provides comprehensive, compassionate, and skilled nursing care to newborns who require specialized care in the NICU. This role includes monitoring infants’ vital signs, administering medications, and providing support to families of critically ill neonates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Provide direct care to neonates, including assessment, monitoring of vital signs, administering medications, feeding, and assisting with respiratory support.
  • Monitoring: Regularly monitor infants' oxygen levels, heart rate, temperature, and other vital parameters. Respond promptly to any changes in their condition.
  • Equipment Operation: Use specialized neonatal equipment such as incubators, ventilators, and infusion pumps, ensuring they are correctly set up, maintained, and functioning.
  • Administering Treatments: Administer prescribed medications, IV fluids, and other treatments as ordered by the attending neonatologist or pediatrician.
  • Collaboration with Medical Team: Work closely with neonatologists, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement care plans.
  • Family Support: Provide emotional support and education to parents and families of neonates, explaining medical conditions, treatments, and progress. Assist them in understanding and coping with their infant’s condition.
  • Infection Control: Ensure a sterile environment and follow strict infection control procedures to prevent the spread of infections in the NICU.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all care provided, including monitoring charts, medication administration, and any significant changes in the infant’s condition.
  • Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond to neonatal emergencies such as respiratory distress, cardiac arrest, or other life-threatening situations.
  • Newborn Care: Assist with newborn feeding, including breastfeeding support and tube feeding if necessary.
  • Patient Advocacy: Advocate for the well-being of the neonate and ensure that the highest standard of care is maintained at all times.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: A Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid nursing license. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience in neonatal nursing or in an intensive care setting is highly desirable. Some facilities may require NICU-specific certification.
  • Certification: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is typically required. Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required for some positions.
  • Clinical Skills: Expertise in neonatal care, understanding of neonate physiology, and ability to perform specialized tasks, such as neonatal resuscitation.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with medical staff, parents, and family members.
  • Compassionate Care: Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to offer emotional support to families in stressful situations.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of attention to detail when monitoring neonates and administering care.
  • Critical Thinking: Ability to assess and respond to changes in the infant’s condition quickly and effectively.

Work Environment:

  • NICU Staff Nurses work in a neonatal intensive care unit within a hospital setting, typically in a 24/7 environment.
  • The role may require rotating shifts, night shifts, weekends, and holidays, as neonatal care is needed at all times.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and move patients or equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require dexterity and focus, including administering injections and monitoring medical devices.
  • May require lifting or repositioning neonates, which can sometimes involve moving them in incubators or specialized equipment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: ₹15,000.00 - ₹30,000.00 per month
