Job Description


The roles and responsibilities of a Resident Medical Officer majorly includes a RMO is responsible for ensuring that each patient gets the best medical care in the hospital. The key roles and responsibilities of an RMO include:

  • Supervising patients visiting the hospital to seek treatment as in-patients and out-patients and ensuring a hassle-free medical care.
  • Responding to emergencies and assisting consultants in providing life support.
  • Performing medical examinations and diagnosis and differential diagnosis.
  • Completing all documentations by consultants (ER notes, History, clinical examination, round notes, EWS, SOFA, APACHE, clinical care plan, intake-output chart etc.) of patient files and completing the investigation charts.
  • Coordinating on rounds with consultants and getting the tests which are advised by the consultants. Collecting reports and sharing with consultant to know if any change in care plan.
  • Studying and modifying patients diets regularly based on how the patient is responding to the already prescribed medication and treatment.
  • Updating RMO notes in every round or as when required in software as well.
  • Preparing discharge summary in software and analyzing there are no short form used other than the abbreviation list issued by organization.
  • Supervising the hospital patient area wherever RMO is posted.
  • Working with other RMO and doing handover and takeover -patient to patient-bed to bed, to provide around-the-clock services to patients.
  • Assessing urgent admissions as required when the consultant on duty is not immediately available.
  • Attending casualty calls 24*7in case of emergency.
  • Supervising and mentoring nurses, Group D employees, and interns in the hospital.
  • RMO will make sure that Safe handling of Hospital Biomedical Waste that is Segregation, Collection, treatment, storage, transportation, and incineration of biomedical waste is done in his/her duty area.
  • RMO will sign and issue attendance and discharge certificates when required by the patients.
  • RMO will be coordinate with in-charge of the Ambulance Van of the Hospital and for the regulation of its movements, also checking the ambulance inventory and equipment every shift changes and before leaving for taking the patient.
  • RMO will function under the supervisory care of the Medical Superintendent/CAO so far as patient care is concerned.
  • CMO (casualty medical officer) is authorized to issue Medical Certificates to the hospital patients after discussing with consultant in charge and also authorized to sign their reimbursement claims in coordination with administrator.
  • RMO will attend to such other duties as may be entrusted to him by the Medical Superintendent/CAO or the Director from time to time.
  • RMO will scrutinize and sign the indents, received from Departments before stocks are issued from the stores.
  • RMO to attend to camp duties as assigned.
  • RMO to maintain a logbook for the clinical procedures learnt by then and done by them.
  • Maintain quality indicator as per NABH guidelines.
  • Responsible for patient treatment as prescribed by the concerned consultant.
  • Ensure all incidents should be reported to the quality department.
  • Help MODs in co-ordination with the other staff and patient or patient attendant.
  • Take proper consent for high risk surgery, patient restrain etc.(for which a compulsory consent form is released by the organization).
  • Daily briefing of the patient status to the attendant of patient or in case of no attendants-to the patients.
  • Accountable for all clinical, administrative ,operational work of concern department.
  • Inform the consultant immediately if any patient having critical alert value with his/her investigation report.
  • Ensure best HIC practices in your department.
  • Participate in compulsory Hospital based training, i.e., Fire and Manual Handling renewal of BLS/ACLS/PALS/NALS when required etc.
  • To carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time and at the discretion of Medical Superintendent /Medical Director /Management.
