Machine Shop Engineer / Roll Shop Manager

Key Responsibilities:

Machine Shop Operations

• Supervise and execute machining operations such as turning, milling, lathe, boring, and roll grinding (manual & CNC).
• Optimize machining parameters, tool usage, and cutting speeds to improve efficiency and tool life.
• Ensure the timely execution of machining jobs as per the production plan and customer deadlines.
• Plan and carry out preventive and breakdown maintenance of machine tools and shop equipment.

Roll Shop Management

• Manage end-to-end roll shop operations including roll handling, pre-machining inspection, alignment, and final finishing.
• Maintain surface finish and dimensional accuracy of rolls as per technical drawings and client specifications.
• Liaise with Foundry, Heat Treatment, and Quality departments to maintain consistent production flow and quality.

Production Planning & Control

• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly production schedules based on customer orders and shop capacity.
• Coordinate raw material and tooling availability to avoid production delays.
• Monitor shift-wise production targets and ensure adherence to delivery timelines.

Manpower Planning & Administration

• Plan manpower requirements for all shifts and ensure adequate staffing.
• Manage operator rotations, attendance, leave schedules, and shop floor discipline.
• Conduct training and skill development sessions for operators and technicians.

Drawing, Gauge & Toolroom Management

• Read and interpret complex mechanical drawings and blueprints accurately.
• Ensure availability, calibration, and proper usage of measuring gauges and instruments.
• Maintain toolroom inventory, manage tool regrinding and replacement schedules.

Housekeeping & Safety

• Ensure clean, organized, and safe work areas through 5S implementation.
• Conduct routine safety checks and enforce the use of PPE and other safety protocols.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement and safety awareness.

Surplus & Scrap Management

• Track surplus or excess production and coordinate its appropriate usage, storage, or reprocessing.
• Ensure proper documentation and reporting of scrap and surplus to minimize material wastage.

Team & Process Management

• Lead, train, and guide a team of machine operators, shift engineers, and technical staff.
• Maintain shift logs, machine performance records, and other documentation as required.
• Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and initiate actions for process improvements.

Technical Support & Quality Assurance

• Support QA/QC teams during inspections, audits, and troubleshooting of machining defects.
• Drive root cause analysis and implement CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions).
• Suggest and implement process changes to improve quality, reduce cycle times, and lower operational costs.

Candidate Profile:

• Educational Qualification:

  / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical / Production / Industrial Engineering

• Experience Range:

  1 to 25 years in machine shop/roll shop/forging/casting industries

• Industry Preference:

  Roll manufacturing, steel plants, forging, or heavy machining sectors

Skills Required:

• Strong knowledge of machining operations: turning, roll grinding, milling, CNC operations
• Familiarity with different types of cast and forged rolls
• Leadership and people management for senior roles
• Analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills
• Working knowledge of shop floor safety practices
