Java Back End Developer

Job Title:

Role Overview:

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, implement and maintain backend services using Java (8/11/17 or higher) and related frameworks.
  
• Develop RESTful APIs, microservices and integrations with internal/external systems.
  
• Collaborate with product managers, architects and other engineers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
  
• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code, following best practices & design patterns (OOP, SOLID, etc.).
  
• Optimise application performance (latency, throughput, resource usage).
  
• Ensure code quality via unit testing, integration testing, code reviews and participating in CI/CD pipelines.
  
• Work with relational (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle) and/or NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) databases: schema design, query optimisation, data modelling.
  
• Use version control (Git), build tools (Maven/Gradle), automated build/deploy procedures (Jenkins/GitHub Actions/other).
  
• Work in an Agile/Scrum team environment, participate in sprints, stand-ups, retrospectives.
  
• Troubleshoot, debug and resolve production issues; contribute to monitoring, logging and alerts.
  
• Stay updated with backend tech trends, propose improvements to architecture, tooling, and processes.
  

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science / Engineering / Information Technology (or equivalent).
  
• Minimum 3 years of experience in backend development using Java (preferably Java 8 or above).
  
• Good hands-on experience with Spring Framework / Spring Boot.
  
• Strong knowledge of REST API design/implementation.
  
• Experience with database technologies (SQL and/or NoSQL).
  
• Familiarity with version control (Git) and build tools (Maven/Gradle).
  
• Understanding of object-oriented programming, design patterns, software architecture.
  
• Able to work independently and as part of a team; good communication skills.
  

Preferred (Nice-to-Have) Skills:

• Experience in microservices architecture, Spring Cloud, message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
  
• Exposure to containerisation (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes).
  
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  
• Experience with CI/CD, monitoring/observability (Prometheus, ELK, Splunk).
  
• Familiarity with Agile development methodologies, test-driven development (TDD) or behaviour-driven development (BDD).
  
• Performance tuning, caching strategies, distributed systems experience.
