Job Description

Job Summary

The ICU Nursing In-Charge is responsible for the overall management, coordination, and supervision of nursing care in the Intensive Care Unit. This role ensures high-quality patient care, staff efficiency, adherence to clinical protocols, and compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Oversee and ensure delivery of safe, high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill patients
  • Monitor patient conditions, clinical outcomes, and ICU indicators
  • Assist physicians during critical procedures and emergencies
  • Ensure proper use and functioning of ICU equipment (ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps, etc.)
  • Maintain infection control practices and patient safety standards

Administrative & Leadership Responsibilities

  • Supervise ICU nursing staff and support staff on each shift
  • Prepare duty rosters, leave planning, and staff allocation
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and skill mix at all times
  • Conduct regular audits of nursing documentation and clinical practices
  • Participate in policy formulation, quality improvement, and accreditation activities

Staff Management & Training

  • Orient and mentor newly joined ICU nurses
  • Conduct regular training, competency assessments, and skill updates
  • Provide performance feedback and participate in staff appraisals
  • Promote teamwork, discipline, and professional conduct

Coordination & Communication

  • Act as a liaison between doctors, nursing staff, administration, and other departments
  • Communicate patient care plans effectively to staff and families
  • Handle patient and family concerns professionally

Documentation & Compliance

  • Ensure accurate and timely nursing documentation
  • Maintain ICU records, logs, and reports
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, legal requirements, and ethical standards
  • Participate in incident reporting and root cause analysis

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree or Diploma in Nursing (BSc Nursing / GNM)
  • Valid Nursing Council Registration
  • Certification in Critical Care Nursing (preferred)

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills
  • Excellent clinical knowledge of critical care nursing
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage emergencies
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of ICU protocols, infection control, and quality standards
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with hospital information systems
