  • Alignment and route selection
  • Design of pavement, drainage, and structures

Outputs include: drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.

2. Site PreparationActivities

  • Clearing and grubbing (removal of vegetation, debris)
  • Demolition of existing structures
  • Relocation of utilities (water lines, cables, etc.)
  • Earthwork planning and site marking by surveyors

3. Earthworks

This is one of the most important stages.

Processes

  • Cutting (removing soil/rock from high areas)
  • Filling/Embankment (adding soil to low areas)
  • Compaction using rollers
  • Grading and levelling to achieve design slope and shape

Materials

  • Natural soil
  • Selected fill material
  • Rock
  • Stabilized soil (lime/cement treated)

4. Subgrade Preparation

The subgrade is the top of the compacted soil layer.

Tasks

  • Achieve required density and CBR (California Bearing Ratio)
  • Shape and level the formation
  • Fix soft spots with soil stabilization or geotextiles

5. Sub-Base and Base Course Construction

These layers provide structural strength above the subgrade.

Sub-base (optional depending on design)

  • Granular Sub-Base (GSB)
  • Crusher run material

Base Course

  • Water Bound Macadam (WBM)
  • Wet Mix Macadam (WMM)
  • Cement-treated base (CTB)
  • Bitumen-treated base (BTB)

6. Pavement Construction1. Flexible Pavement (Asphalt Roads)

Layers include:

  • Prime coat + Tack coat
  • Binder course (asphalt)
  • Wearing course (asphalt concrete, SMA, or mastic asphalt)

2. Rigid Pavement (Concrete Roads)

Steps include:

  • Formwork setting
  • Placing reinforcement (if required)
  • Pouring and vibrating concrete
  • Curing and joint cutting

7. Drainage Construction

Essential to extend pavement life.

Types:

  • Side drains
  • Culverts
  • Cross drainage structures
  • Stormwater systems
  • Median drains

Common tests:

  • Soil compaction (Proctor, sand cone)
  • Material gradation
  • Asphalt density and temperature
  • Concrete slump and strength tests
  • Level checks using survey equipment

11. Safety During Construction

  • Traffic management and signage
  • PPE for workers
  • Hazard identification and control measures
