Job Description

The Dean of Research & Innovation provides visionary leadership to advance the institutions research enterprise, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen innovation ecosystems. The role is responsible for shaping strategic research priorities, increasing research funding, developing partnerships with industry and government, and promoting a culture of high-quality, ethical, and impactful research.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive institutional research and innovation strategy aligned with the universitys mission and long-term goals.
  • Identify emerging research areas and growth opportunities and facilitate interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Promote global competitiveness and visibility of the institution’s research output.

2. Research Development & Administration

  • Oversee the development, management, and evaluation of research programs, centers, and institutes.
  • Strengthen research governance, policies, compliance, and integrity in accordance with national and international standards.
  • Lead efforts to grow external research funding from government agencies, private sector, donors, and international bodies.

3. Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Technology Transfer

  • Promote a culture of innovation, commercialization, and knowledge transfer.
  • Oversee intellectual property (IP) management, licensing activities, and startup/venture development.
  • Build innovation ecosystems, including incubators, accelerators, and industry partnerships.

4. Collaboration & Partnerships

  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with industry, government, research councils, NGOs, and international academic institutions.
  • Represent the institution in national and global research networks and consortiums.

5. Faculty & Researcher Support

  • Enhance faculty research capacity through mentorship, training, and resource allocation.
  • Establish programs to support early-career researchers and promote inclusive research excellence.
  • Oversee recruitment and development of research staff.

6. Infrastructure & Resource Management

  • Guide development of research facilities, laboratories, and digital research infrastructure.
  • Ensure efficient management of research budgets, grants, and funding portfolios.
  • Monitor research performance and produce annual research and innovation reports.

7. Policy & Compliance

  • Ensure institutional compliance with ethical standards, safety practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead research governance committees, such as ethics boards and grants review panels.

Qualifications & Experience

  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree from a recognized institution.
  • Distinguished record of research, scholarship, and academic leadership.
  • Significant experience in research administration, grant management, and institutional research planning.
  • Proven track record of securing external funding and leading large research initiatives.
  • Experience in innovation management, technology transfer, or entrepreneurship (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of research governance, ethics, and compliance frameworks.
