Senior Azure Data Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Azure Data Engineer to design and implement a scalable Azure-based asset registry that integrates data from 120+ SQL Server e-Quip systems and 130+ CSV-based hospital sources.

The engineer will be responsible for validating architecture choices (Azure SQL + Azure Functions vs Microsoft Fabric), designing the central data model, building ingestion APIs, and delivering weekly batch ETL pipelines. Strong hands-on experience in Azure SQL, Azure Functions, and REST API development is essential.

Role Overview

You will own end-to-end architecture and implementation, including data modelling, ingestion pipelines, API integrations, and performance optimisation across Azure data services. Exposure to Microsoft Fabric concepts is required.

Key Technical Skills

• Azure SQL (schema design, indexing, bulk load processes, performance tuning)
• Azure Functions (serverless ETL, scheduled jobs, batch processing)
• REST API development using Azure App Service / .NET
• Microsoft Fabric (lakehouse, medallion architecture)
• ETL/ELT design for batch ingestion and delta loads
• Data modelling for multi-source environments
• CSV ingestion using adapter-based patterns
• Power BI integration with Azure SQL or Fabric
• Architecture decision-making (ADR, cost modelling)

Required Experience

• 5+ years of experience in Azure data engineering or cloud analytics
• Strong Azure SQL expertise including performance tuning
• Hands-on Azure Functions experience for ETL (beyond Data Factory use)
• Experience building REST ingestion APIs with App Service /.NET
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Fabric
• Ability to document architecture clearly (ADR, API contracts, design patterns)
• Experience with batch workloads, delta updates, and CSV transformations
• Understanding of data security, NHS data protection, and anonymisation requirements
