Job Description

  • IP Strategy and Portfolio Management

    :
    • Develop and execute comprehensive IP strategies aligned with the group's business goals, including patent prosecution, trademark registration, trade secret protection, and enforcement for novel drugs, AI-driven technologies, and branded generics.
    • Oversee the global IP portfolio, conducting freedom-to-operate analyses, IP due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and business development deals.
    • Monitor competitive IP landscapes, regulatory developments, and emerging trends in pharma and medtech to mitigate risks and identify opportunities.

  • Legal Leadership and Compliance

    :
    • Lead the legal department, managing a team of attorneys, patent agents, and support staff; foster a high-performance culture through mentorship and professional development.
    • Provide expert legal counsel on a wide range of matters, including commercial agreements, licensing, contracts, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution.
    • Handle IP-related litigation, post-grant proceedings, arbitrations, and negotiations to protect the group's assets.

  • Business Collaboration

    :
    • Partner with R&D, business development, and commercial teams across Group of companies to integrate IP considerations into product development and market strategies.
    • Advise on commercial agreements for drug discovery partnerships, medtech collaborations, and generics distribution in the US, UK, EU, and other markets.
    • Conduct IP training for internal stakeholders and promote a culture of innovation and ethical compliance.

  • Transactional and Risk Management

    :
    • Lead IP diligence for transactions, including M&A, BD&L (business development and licensing), and joint ventures.
    • Ensure timely, proactive advice on IP risks, mitigation strategies, and governance frameworks.
    • Manage external counsel, budgets, and resources efficiently to support group-wide initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education

    : Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution; additional advanced degree in life sciences (e.g., MS or PhD in biology, chemistry, biotechnology, or related field) is highly preferred.
  • Licensing and Certifications

    : Registered Patent Attorney or qualified IP lawyer admitted to practice in at least one relevant jurisdiction (e.g., India, US, EU, or UK); in good standing with no disciplinary history.
  • Professional Experience

    :
    • 10+ years of post-qualification experience in IP law, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within the pharmaceutical, biotech, or medtech industry.
    • Proven track record in IPR management, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications, freedom-to-operate opinions, and portfolio strategy.
    • Extensive experience in novel drug development, branded generics, and commercial agreements (e.g., licensing, supply, distribution, and partnerships).
    • Prior work in similar group structures or companies focused on AI-driven innovations, drug discovery, and international markets (US, UK, EU) is essential.
    • Demonstrated success in handling IP litigation, transactions, and cross-functional collaborations.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and contract laws in pharma and medtech contexts.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills; ability to convey complex IP concepts to non-legal audiences.
  • Leadership abilities to build and motivate teams, manage high-stakes projects under pressure, and drive strategic initiatives.
  • Proficiency in English; additional languages (e.g., Hindi, Gujarati) are a plus for India-based operations.
  • High ethical standards, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
