Assistant General Manager EAF

Role Purpose

Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Furnace (LF), Vacuum Degassing (VD), and Hot Metal (HM) handling

Key Responsibilities

1. Operations Management

• Plan and execute daily/monthly steelmaking operations to meet production schedules.
  
• Ensure smooth operation of

  EAF

  (charge mix management, power optimization, slag foaming, tapping),

  LF

  (temperature control, alloy addition, inclusion modification),

  VD

  (vacuum treatment, hydrogen/nitrogen removal), and

  HM handling

  (charging logistics, desulphurization, slag management).
• Coordinate with Raw Material Handling, Coke Oven, Blast Furnace, and Continuous Casting Machine for integrated operations.
  
• Maintain sequence continuity to maximize productivity and reduce turnaround time.
  

2. Process Control & Quality Assurance

• Ensure adherence to process parameters for consistent steel chemistry, temperature, and cleanliness.
  
• Monitor bath refining, slag chemistry, deoxidation, and inclusion control.
  
• Collaborate with Quality Assurance for metallurgical defect analysis and corrective measures.
  
• Drive adoption of advanced process control technologies and Level-2 automation.
  

3. Maintenance & Reliability

• Ensure mechanical, electrical, and refractory reliability of EAF, LF, VD, and HM handling systems.
  
• Oversee preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for critical equipment (EAF transformer, electrodes, shell, furnace lining, ladles, vacuum pumps, etc.).
  
• Optimize refractory life (ladles, EAF/LF lining, purging plugs).
  
• Coordinate with Mechanical, Electrical, and Instrumentation departments for zero unplanned downtime.
  

4. People Management

• Lead a multidisciplinary team of shift in-charges, operators, and maintenance staff.
  
• Provide training on EAF/LF/VD/HM operations, metallurgy, safety, and troubleshooting.
  
• Build team capabilities for advanced steelmaking and automation systems.
  

5. Safety, Health & Environment (SHE)

• Ensure strict compliance with SMS safety protocols and statutory requirements.
  
• Enforce safe practices in EAF electrode handling, ladle movements, vacuum operations, and HM charging.
  
• Drive SHE culture to achieve zero accident performance.
  
• Implement energy-efficient and environment-friendly practices (dust suppression, slag utilization, emission reduction).
  

6. Cost & Resource Management

• Optimize power consumption in EAF and LF through efficient operating practices.
  
• Monitor and control consumption of electrodes, refractories, ferro-alloys, fluxes, and utilities.
  
• Drive yield improvement projects to minimize metal losses and cost/ton of liquid steel.
  
• Implement cost-saving initiatives and lean manufacturing practices.
  

7. Coordination & Reporting

• Coordinate with upstream (BF/DRI, RMHS) and downstream (CCM, Rolling Mills) for smooth production flow.
  
• Ensure proper ladle logistics and heat scheduling to avoid bottlenecks.
  
• Prepare daily/monthly production, yield, cost, and downtime reports.
  
• Present performance dashboards and improvement plans to SMS Head and Plant Management.
  

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

• Production achievement vs. target (MT/month).
  
• EAF productivity (taps/day, t/tap, power consumption per ton).
  
• LF refining efficiency and heat cycle time.
  
• VD utilization (% of heats treated, degassing performance).
  
• Hot Metal utilization efficiency.
  
• Yield (%) and quality rejection rate.
  
• Refractory and electrode consumption norms.
  
• Safety performance (LTI, MTI, near misses).
  
• Cost/ton of liquid steel vs. budget.
  

Qualifications & Experience

• Education

  : B.Tech/B.E. in Metallurgy / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering.

• Experience

  : 15–20 years in Steel Industry with at least 7–8 years in leadership roles in

  EAF/LF/VD/HM

  operations.
• Proven expertise in secondary metallurgy, steel refining, and vacuum treatment.
  
• Experience in automation, process optimization, and advanced steelmaking practices.
  

Competencies & Skills

• Strong technical knowledge of EAF steelmaking, secondary metallurgy, and HM logistics.
  
• Sound understanding of refractory, electrodes, ferro-alloys, and slag practices.
  
• Leadership and team management capabilities.
  
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  
• Knowledge of automation (PLC, SCADA, Level-2 systems).
  
• Focus on safety, quality, cost, and sustainability.
