Job Summary

The Quality Welding Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all welded components and assemblies meet the defined quality, code, and specification requirements. This role involves setting welding quality standards, performing inspections, monitoring process controls, and working closely with fabrication, design, and maintenance teams to maintain high levels of weld integrity across rolling mill / heavy equipment / structural fabrication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain welding quality standards, procedures, work instructions, and inspection checklists (in line with applicable codes such as AWS, ASME, ISO, etc.).
  • Review welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder qualification records (WQR) to ensure compliance.
  • Perform weld inspections (visual, non-destructive testing (NDT) such as radiography, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant) during production and in-process stages.
  • Monitor and control welding parameters (current, voltage, travel speed, preheat/post-heat, interpass temperature) to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Root-cause analysis of welding defects (cracks, porosity, lack of fusion, undercut, etc.) and lead corrective / preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Work closely with design and fabrication teams to review weld joint details, joint preparation, fit-up, weld sequencing, and distortion control.
  • Ensure materials (filler metals, base metals, fluxes, consumables) conform to specification and traceability.
  • Oversee welder training, certification, and re-qualification programs.
  • Conduct first-article weld inspections and qualification of prototype / trial welds.
  • Interface with external clients, auditors, or third-party inspectors during audits or inspections.
  • Maintain required documentation, reports, and records (NDT reports, weld maps, inspection logs).
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, process audits, supplier quality of welding consumables, and benchmarking best practices.
  • Ensure adherence to safety and health guidelines in welding operations (fume control, PPE, gas safety).

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical / Metallurgical / Welding Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5–10 years (or as needed) of experience in a heavy fabrication / steel plant / heavy machinery manufacturing environment, with significant exposure to welding quality control.
  • Strong knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, submerged arc welding, flux-cored, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with NDT methods (RT, UT, MT, PT) and interpreting results.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes & standards (e.g. ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1 / D1.5, ISO 3834, EN standards, etc.).
  • Experience in root-cause analysis tools (FMEA, 8D, Ishikawa, etc.).
  • Good understanding of metallurgy, heat treatment, welding metallurgy, distortion control.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally (design, production, maintenance).
  • Proficient in reading & interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office, quality systems, databases).

Key Competencies / Attributes

  • Strong attention to detail and quality mindset
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Leadership / influencing skills
