Job Description

Staff Nurses

Key Responsibilities

  • Neonate Care & Safety:

  • Ensure the

    safety and security of neonates

    by consistently following established safety measures.
  • Monitor neonates on

    incubators and ventilators

    , promptly reporting any abnormal findings.
  • Provide professional

    bedside nursing care

    and prepare comprehensive nursing care plans.
  • Assist doctors in the management of asphyxiated neonates, including

    resuscitation and stabilization

    .
  • Complete the

    preoperative checklist

    before a neonate is transferred to the operation theatre.
  • Communication & Family Support:

  • Provide regular updates on the neonate's condition to parents at least twice a day.
  • Immediately inform parents of any changes in their neonate's condition.
  • Offer

    emotional strength and comfort

    to parents during their time in the NICU.
  • Clinical & Administrative Duties:

  • Review doctors notes and drug charts upon admission and execute actions as required.
  • Ensure all prescribed investigations are conducted and that reports are available for doctors in a timely manner.
  • Raise pharmacy indents, check received items, and manage stock in the bedside locker and medication trolley.
  • Coordinate the procurement of

    blood and blood products

    for transfusions and report any adverse reactions immediately to the treating consultant, Incharge, and Nursing Superintendent.
  • Knowledge & Compliance:

  • Possess a thorough knowledge of

    gestational age assessment

    , and the specific problems associated with premature, post-mature, and growth-restricted neonates.
  • Be aware of and competent in

    APGAR scoring

    .
  • Hold certification in

    NALS & NRP (Neonatal Advanced Life Support & Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

    .
  • Have thorough knowledge of

    I.V. fluid and drug calculations

    .
  • Adhere strictly to protocols for

    Infection Control

    , hand washing, medication, and narcotics.
  • Be aware of and implement

    NABH & NE (Nursing Excellence)

    standards.
  • Ensure visitors comply with

    Aseptic protocols

    when entering the NICU.

Educational Qualifications

  • A degree or diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution.
  • A valid State Registration Nursing Council Certificate is required.

Required Skills

  • Specialized Knowledge:

    Deep understanding of neonatal care, including critical care, resuscitation, and common conditions.
  • Attention to Detail:

    Meticulous in carrying out medical instructions, managing medications, and maintaining patient records.
  • Communication:

    Strong verbal skills to effectively communicate with doctors, nurses, and especially with parents during a stressful time.
  • Teamwork:

    Ability to work collaboratively with the NICU team and other hospital departments.
  • Resilience:

    Capacity to handle high-pressure situations and make quick, informed decisions.
  • Compassion:

    A genuine and caring attitude towards neonates and their families.
