Job Title: Utility Subject Matter Expert (SME) Telecom

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly experienced Utility Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support telecom infrastructure projects with a focus on utility coordination, permitting, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of utility standards, underground and aerial utility systems, and experience working with utility providers, municipalities, and telecom network teams.

Key Responsibilities:

Act as the primary liaison between telecom project teams and utility providers (electric, gas, water, etc.) for coordination of infrastructure deployment.

Review engineering designs and construction drawings to ensure utility compliance and conflict resolution.

Assist in the planning and execution of fiber, small cell, or macro network deployments in areas with complex utility layouts.

Identify potential conflicts with existing utilities and recommend alternative routing or design adjustments.

Support the permitting process by preparing technical documentation, responding to utility agency comments, and ensuring timely approvals.

Guide construction teams on utility clearance requirements, safety protocols, and local utility regulations.

Collaborate with municipalities and DOTs to ensure compliance with utility encroachment policies.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local utility codes and telecom deployment standards.

Train internal stakeholders on best practices for utility coordination in telecom builds.

Qualifications:

Required:

8+ years of experience in utility coordination, engineering, or related fields within telecom.

In-depth understanding of underground and aerial utility systems and regulations.

Experience with fiber deployment, pole attachments, make-ready processes, or joint-use agreements.

Strong technical reading skills for construction and engineering plans.

Familiarity with GIS, AutoCAD, or utility mapping software.

Strong communication and negotiation skills for working with utilities and municipalities.

Preferred:

Bachelor s degree in Civil Engineering, Telecommunications, Construction Management, or a related field.

Prior work with major telecom carriers, utilities, or infrastructure deployment firms.

PMP or PE license is a plus.
