Job Summary
The Senior Landscape Architect is responsible for leading the conceptual, technical, and strategic aspects of landscape design projects across various scales and typologies. This role requires strong design expertise, advanced technical knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to manage complex projects from visioning through construction. The Senior Landscape Architect collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams, guides junior staff, interfaces with clients, and ensures the delivery of functional, sustainable, and visually compelling outdoor environments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design Leadership
- Develop and articulate design concepts, master plans, and detailed landscape solutions for diverse project types, including urban public spaces, streetscapes, townships, hospitality, corporate campuses, residential communities, parks, and ecological restorations.
- Produce high-quality design presentations, renderings, diagrams, and storytelling narratives to communicate ideas effectively to clients and stakeholders.
- Integrate climate-responsive design strategies, biodiversity enhancement, water-sensitive design, and sustainability principles into all proposals.
- Lead the development of planting schemes, material palettes, hardscape detailing, and site-specific landscape features.
2. Technical Expertise
- Prepare detailed construction drawings, technical specifications, BOQs, and tender documentation.
- Review grading plans, irrigation layouts, drainage strategies, and site infrastructural interfaces.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant local codes, environmental regulations, zoning requirements, and safety standards.
- Conduct feasibility studies, site investigations, soil analysis reviews, and environmental impact considerations.
3. Project Management
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, overseeing project schedules, budgets, design deliverables, contracts, and manpower planning.
- Coordinate efforts between internal teams (designers, planners, engineers) and external stakeholders (architects, consultants, contractors).
- Lead progress meetings, prepare project status reports, and ensure timely submission of all deliverables.
- Conduct quality control reviews throughout the design and construction phases to maintain design integrity.
4. Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the primary interface for clients, government agencies, and approval authorities.
- Facilitate workshops, stakeholder charrettes, community engagement sessions, and design presentations.
- Translate client requirements into creative, feasible, and technically sound design solutions.
- Provide strategic guidance to clients on site planning, landscape investment, sustainability, and long-term maintenance.
5. Construction & Site Coordination
- Visit project sites regularly to assess construction progress, evaluate workmanship, and verify adherence to design drawings.
- Provide on-site guidance, resolve technical issues, and recommend modifications to improve constructability.
- Collaborate with contractors on planting installation, hardscape execution, mock-ups, material approvals, and final inspections.
- Prepare site reports, punch lists, and handover documentation.
6. Team Leadership & Mentorship
- Guide, mentor, and supervise junior landscape architects, CAD technicians, and interns.
- Review and refine design work prepared by team members to maintain consistency and quality.
- Support the development of office standards, best practices, and innovative design approaches.
- Participate in internal design critiques and encourage a culture of creativity and excellence.
7. Business Development (Optional Based on Organization)
- Contribute to proposal writing, RFP responses, fee estimates, and project acquisition strategies.
- Represent the firm at conferences, client meetings, and industry events.
- Develop design narratives, graphics, and case studies to support marketing materials.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited institution.
- 8-10 years of professional experience, including leadership on medium- to large-scale projects.
- Professional licensure/registration (as required in the region) is an advantage.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating conceptual design, technical proficiency, and built work.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit (optional), SketchUp, Rhino, Grasshopper, Lumion/Enscape, and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS) and environmental analysis tools is a plus.
- In-depth knowledge of plant species, horticultural practices, climate-responsive design, sustainable infrastructure, and landscape construction methods.
