Job Description

Role & responsibilities

  1. Tool Design & Development:

  • Design injection molds, plastic tooling, and dies for new product designs.
  • Create and review detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of plastic parts and molds using UGNX.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product design, manufacturing, and quality) to optimize the design for manufacturability and functionality.
  • Conduct feasibility analysis for new tool designs, ensuring they meet project timelines and quality standards.
  1. Material & Process Knowledge:

  • Select appropriate plastic materials (thermoplastics, thermosets, etc.) based on part design and functional requirements.
  • Work closely with material engineers to understand the behavior of materials under different conditions.
  • Optimize tool design for injection molding, blow molding, or other plastic manufacturing processes.
  1. Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Assembly:

  • Ensure the mold design can be efficiently manufactured and assembled while minimizing waste and cost.
  • Apply DFM principles to ensure the design can be easily injected, ejected, and cooled.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure that tooling designs adhere to tolerance and quality standards.
  1. Tooling Specifications & Documentation:

  • Prepare detailed tool specifications, cost estimations, and timelines for new tool development.
  • Generate technical documentation (e.g., drawings, specifications, assembly instructions) and ensure proper record-keeping.
  • Conduct mold flow simulations (if required) to analyze and predict potential issues like warpage, shrinkage, or filling.
  1. Testing and Optimization:

  • Oversee the testing and trial runs of the molds to ensure they produce parts within the required specifications.
  • Troubleshoot issues such as part defects, alignment, and cycle time optimization during the molding process.
  • Analyze test results and provide recommendations for design changes or adjustments.
  1. Project Management & Collaboration:

  • Manage multiple tooling projects simultaneously, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Interface with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to ensure smooth communication and resolve any design-related challenges.
  • Lead or support design reviews, making recommendations to improve the mold and part designs based on the analysis of test results.
  1. Continuous Improvement:

  • Implement lessons learned and best practices from previous projects to continuously improve the design process.
  • Stay updated on the latest technologies, trends, and materials in the plastic tooling industry.
  • Contribute to the development and adoption of new design techniques, tools, or software to improve efficiency and reduce lead times.

Preferred candidate profile

Technical Proficiency:

  • Expertise in UGNX for 3D modeling and 2D drafting (mold design, part design, tooling).
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and other engineering tools (e.g., CATIA, AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Strong understanding of plastic manufacturing processes like injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion.
  • Familiarity with mold flow analysis and simulation tools to optimize tool designs before production

Material Science Knowledge:

  • In-depth understanding of various plastics (e.g., ABS, PC, PBT, Nylon) and their processing characteristics.
  • Knowledge of plastic material properties such as shrinkage, strength, rigidity, and thermal conductivity.

Design Skills:

  • Strong background in DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturability & Assembly), mold cavity design, cooling systems, and tool life optimization.
  • Ability to design tooling that minimizes cycle time, cost, and scrap while ensuring quality.

Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills:

  • Expertise in diagnosing and solving issues in the tool design and molding process.
  • Capability to conduct root cause analysis for tooling failures or product defects and provide actionable solutions.

Communication & Teamwork:

  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment, collaborating with design engineers, manufacturing, and quality teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to present technical findings and updates to clients, management, and suppliers.

Additional Qualification:

  • Education

: Cipet /NTTF /Mechanical Engg /Plastic Engineering, Tool Design, Plastics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience
