Armed Security Guard / Personal Security Officer (PSO) Job Description

The primary role of an Armed Security Guard/PSO is to protect people and property using legally permitted weapons.

Core Duties & Responsibilities

• Guard and Monitor: Guard designated premises, people, or assets against threats, risks, and unauthorized access.
• Deter Threats: Maintain a visible presence to deter criminal or inappropriate actions.
• Patrolling: Conduct regular patrols (foot or vehicle) to identify and address potential risks.
• Access Control: Control building access, verify IDs, and manage visitor logs.
• Surveillance: Monitor and operate surveillance cameras and alarm systems.
• Emergency Response: Respond promptly and appropriately to alarms, disturbances, emergencies (including medical), and potential threats.
• Reporting: Prepare detailed incident reports and maintain accurate logs of daily activities and observations.
• Compliance: Carry out duties in line with company procedures and legal requirements (e.g., PSARA-2005 in India).

Required Qualifications and Attributes

• Experience: Previous experience in security, military, or law enforcement is often preferred.
• Training: Completion of required security training (e.g., 160 hours according to PSARA requirements in India).
• Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required.
• Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit, mentally robust, and able to stand for long periods, patrol, and respond to incidents quickly.
• Skills:
• Proficient in the safe handling of firearms and knowledge of safety norms.
• Exceptional attention to detail and situational awareness.
• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to remain calm and composed during emergencies.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Character: Must possess a good moral character, even temperament, and a professional demeanor.

For an armed security professional, obtaining a personal firearm license is a mandatory requirement. The process is stringent and involves a thorough check by the authorities.

Eligibility and Proof of Need

• Age: The applicant must be at least 21 years old.
• Citizenship: Must be a citizen of India.
• Valid Reason: Must provide a detailed letter explaining the genuine reason for needing a firearm, which in this context is for professional duty as an Armed Security Guard/PSO.
• Mental and Physical Fitness: A Medical Certificate confirming mental stability and physical fitness to handle a firearm is required.

Key Steps for Application

• Application Submission: Submit the filled application form and documents to the District Superintendent of Police (SP) or the Licensing Authority.
• Police Verification: The local police conduct a thorough background check, verifying criminal records, assessing the applicant's character in the neighborhood, and confirming the genuineness of the reason cited.
• Interview: The Licensing Authority may call the applicant for a personal interview to assess their knowledge of firearm safety and laws, and their mental readiness.
• Training: The authority may require the applicant to undergo basic firearm safety training from a recognized institute.
