Microbiology / Biotechnology About Project Isolation and characterization of aquaculture important bacterial pathogens and phages: The proposed research focuses on the isolation and characterization of bacteriophages specific to Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a key pathogen causing significant mortality in shrimp aquaculture. With the growing threat of antibiotic resistance and the need for alternative disease management strategies, this study aims to explore phages as both biocontrol and diagnostic agents. Environmental samples from aquaculture settings will be screened for lytic phages using V. parahaemolyticus clinical and environmental isolates. The isolated phages will be evaluated for their lytic activity, host range, efficiency of plating, and growth dynamics. Further characterization will involve genomic and morphological analysis to determine phage identity and stability under aquaculture-relevant conditions. The long-term objective is to develop phage-based diagnostic tools that enable rapid and specific detection of V. parahaemolyticus, using either reporter-tagged phages or amplification-based systems. This project not only enhances understanding of phage-host interactions but also supports the development of innovative, non-antibiotic approaches for pathogen monitoring and control in shrimp farming, thereby promoting sustainable aquaculture practices.
