Psychiatric Consultant

Role & responsibilities

A Psychiatrist is responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing mental health disorders in patients. They provide medical care, therapy, and guidance, working closely with nurses, psychologists, and other healthcare staff to ensure comprehensive psychiatric care.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Assessment & Diagnosis:

• Conduct psychiatric evaluations, including medical history, mental status, and risk assessment.

• Diagnose mental illnesses (depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, etc.).

Treatment & Therapy:

• Prescribe medications and monitor their effects.

• Provide psychotherapy and counseling where appropriate.

• Develop individualized treatment plans.

Collaboration & Teamwork

• Work with psychiatric nurses, psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists.

• Guide staff on patient care plans, crisis management, and interventions.

Emergency Handling:

Manage psychiatric emergencies, including aggressive behavior, suicidal tendencies, or psychotic episodes.

Documentation & Records:

• Maintain accurate patient medical records and treatment notes.

• Ensure confidentiality and adherence to legal/ethical standards.

Patient & Family Education:

Educate patients and families about mental health conditions, treatments, and coping strategies.

Research & Training:

• Participate in research studies, mental health programs, and staff training.

• Keep updated with latest psychiatric guidelines and best practices.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Qualification: MD / DNB in Psychiatry (or equivalent).

Experience: 15 years in psychiatric hospitals or mental health care preferred.

Skills:

• Strong knowledge of mental health disorders and pharmacological treatments.

• Excellent communication, empathy, and decision-making skills.

• Ability to work in high-pressure/emergency situations.

Working Conditions:

• Hospital psychiatric wards, outpatient clinics, or mental health centers.

• Exposure to challenging patient behaviors.
