Staff Nurse

Role & responsibilities

The Staff Nurse in a Psychiatry Hospital is responsible for providing direct patient care, assisting in mental health treatment, and supporting doctors and therapists in the psychiatric ward. The role requires empathy, patience, and knowledge of psychiatric nursing practices.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care:

Monitor and record vital signs, behavior, and mental status of patients.

Administer medications as prescribed by the psychiatrist.

Assist patients with daily activities (bathing, feeding, mobility).

Clinical Support:

Assist doctors in psychiatric assessments, therapies, and procedures.

Maintain accurate patient records and case notes.

Safety & Environment:

Ensure a safe environment for patients, preventing self-harm or aggression.

Implement hospital policies regarding infection control, safety, and hygiene.

Counseling & Communication:

Provide emotional support and basic counseling to patients and families.

Communicate patient progress to doctors and family members when required.

Emergency Handling:

Respond to psychiatric emergencies, such as violent behavior or suicidal tendencies.

Assist in restraint or seclusion procedures if necessary, following guidelines.

Team Collaboration:

Work closely with psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and other staff.

Participate in staff meetings, training, and workshops related to mental health care.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Qualification: B.Sc Nursing / Diploma in Nursing, registered with Nursing Council.

Experience: Preferably 13 years in psychiatric/mental health nursing.

Skills:

Empathy, patience, and good interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of psychiatric medications, mental health conditions, and treatment protocols.

Ability to handle emergencies calmly.

Working Conditions:

Work in psychiatric wards or outpatient settings.

Shift-based work including night duties.

May require handling challenging patient behaviors.
