Post Doctoral Research Scholar

Advanced Materials Research Battery Materials

The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA), located in Hampton, Virginia, has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar to investigate energy storage materials for aerospace applications. The researcher will explore synthesis, characterization, processing, and applications of novel battery materials for a variety of energy storage systems, including but not limited to lithium-ion batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, lithium air batteries, supercapacitors, and other advanced electrochemical systems. Of particular interest are materials and processes that enable high energy and high-power solid-state batteries. The expected outcome is experimental data that advances the scientific knowledge in the field with requirements for aerospace applications to be the priority consideration. The expected outcome also includes technical presentations, invention disclosures, project reports and peer reviewed publications.The successful candidate will work with engineers, scientists, student interns, and technicians on-site at the Advanced Materials Processing Branch, NASA Langley Research Center located in Hampton, Virginia.

Primary Responsibilities

Support ongoing NASA research in energy storage materials and process development for solid-state and other advanced battery systems. Exploration of novel energy storage materials and processes for future aerospace applications. Interact with other researchers on the team. Prepare technical presentations and papers describing the results of the work.

Key Requirements

Ph.D. degree in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrochemistry, electrical engineering or related fields Knowledge in energy storage materials and various advanced battery systems General chemistry laboratory skills including synthesis and characterization. Strong oral and written communication skills Strong and independent work ethic Ability to successfully complete a background investigation required to obtain a NASA badge

Desired Skills

Experience in battery cell assembly, testing, and post-mortem analyses is preferred. Knowledge/experience in solid-state electrolyte and battery systems Knowledge/experience in nanomaterials and applications Experience in materials science, analytical chemistry, related characterization methods, instrumentation operation, and interpretation of experimental results.Interested candidates should apply via NIAs career opportunities site located at www.nianet.org under the About NIA tab.
