Job Summary

Medical Coding Team Lead

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of medical coders focused on E/M and surgical coding.

  • Assign workloads, monitor productivity, and ensure timely completion of coding tasks.

  • Perform coding audits to ensure accuracy, compliance (CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, CMS guidelines), and adherence to documentation standards.

  • Provide feedback, mentoring, and training to team members on complex coding issues and updates.

  • Stay current with changes in coding guidelines, payer policies, and industry best practices.

  • Collaborate with billing, compliance, and clinical teams to resolve coding discrepancies or denials.

  • Ensure team compliance with HIPAA and other relevant privacy and security regulations.

  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations of coding staff.

  • Report performance metrics, audit results, and productivity updates to leadership.

  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase coding accuracy and efficiency.

  • Experience

    • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on medical coding experience with a focus on E/M and surgical procedures.

    • Minimum of 12 years in a lead or supervisory role.

  • Skills

    • In-depth knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II codes.

    • Strong understanding of CMS, NCCI edits, payer-specific guidelines, and documentation requirements.

    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

    • Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems and coding software (e.g., EPIC, 3M, EncoderPro).

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    • Ability to train and mentor junior coders effectively.
