Manager - R&D, Formulations & QA

Reporting To

Experience

Industry to target: Home Care, Detergents, Personal Care/Cosmetics (mainly Shampos, Soaps etc.) only.

Product Development & Formulation

• Develop new formulations for home care and cleaning products, including Disinfectant Floor Cleaners, Toilet Cleaners, Liquid Detergent, Hand Wash Liquids etc.
• Optimize existing formulas for cleaning performance, fragrance stability, foam profile, cost reduction, sustainability, and raw material availability.
• Improve and optimize existing formulations for performance, cost, sustainability, safety, and regulatory compliance.
• Conduct performance tests such as soil-removal evaluation, degreasing efficiency, disinfectant efficacy, pH stability, viscosity profile, and packaging compatibility.
• Manage stability studies under various conditions and ensure all formulations meet safety and quality standards.

2. R&D Project Leadership

• Lead the R&D project pipeline aligned with business strategy and market trends in cleaning products.
• Collaborate with Marketing, Procurement, Production, and QA/QC to translate consumer insights and trends into technical, feasible product concepts.
• Prepare technical documents including formulation sheets, test protocols, specifications, BOMs, and pilot batch reports.
• Support scale-up activities, process optimization, and equipment selection during plant trials.

3. Team Management & Lab Oversight

• Supervise formulation chemists, lab technicians, and junior QC/QA staff.
• Maintain a safe, compliant laboratory aligned with chemical handling guidelines, FDA/BIS standards, and internal safety procedures.
• Oversee raw material evaluation, lab equipment calibration, sample management, and procurement of chemicals and testing consumables.
• Provide training, coaching, and mentorship to enhance technical skills and innovation capabilities.

4. Technical Expertise & Troubleshooting

• Solve formulation challenges related to surfactants, chelating agents, solvents, enzymes, disinfectants, fragrances, dyes, thickeners, and pH modifiers.
• Partner with purchase team to explore new raw materials, cost-saving opportunities, and technical advancements in cleaning chemistry.
• Support production in resolving process deviations, shelf-life issues, separation/instability, and fragrance or color changes.

5. Regulatory & Quality Compliance

• Ensure all formulations comply with regional and central standards such as FDA, BIS etc.
• Prepare and review SDS, COAs, technical dossiers, label claims, and microbiological test requirements.
• Work with QA/Regulatory to address nonconformities, quality concerns, and customer complaints.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• Bachelors or Masters degree in Pharmacy, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, or related discipline.

Experience

• 712 years of R&D experience in home care or cleaning product formulations (e.g., detergents, surface cleaners, sanitizers, dishwash liquids, bleach products).
• At least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial position.
• Hands-on knowledge of surfactant chemistry, disinfectant actives, enzyme technology, fragrance systems, rheology modifiers, and cleaning performance testing.
• Experience in production scale-up in FMCG or chemical manufacturing environments.
