We are a growing team of 60+ people, working primarily remote, headquartered in Australia and consisting of teams working across APAC and Europe.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Lead Backend Engineer to spearhead backend development, architecture management, and scalability of our next-generation DSP/SSP Ad Exchange platform. The role involves taking complete ownership of the platform backend, ensuring robust performance, and delivering seamless integrations with external systems and APIs.

Role Responsibilities:

Lead the backend engineering efforts for iions DSP/SSP Ad Exchange platform
Design, develop, maintain, and optimize backend services, ensuring scalability, reliability, and high availability
Collaborate closely with product managers, frontend developers, and DevOps to implement new features and integrations
Manage API design and maintain integrations with third-party platforms (external DSP/SSP, Audience providers, etc.)
Drive the performance optimization of real-time bidding (RTB) processes and handle high-throughput data pipelines
Develop comprehensive technical documentation and foster knowledge-sharing within the engineering team
Implement robust monitoring, logging, and alerting infrastructure

Role Requirements:

7+ years of professional experience in backend engineering, ideally within AdTech platforms (DSP, SSP, Ad Exchange)
2+ years of experience leading backend teams, with a track record of mentorship and successful technical leadership
Demonstrated capability in handling systems designed for high traffic volumes, low latency, and horizontal scalability
Proven track record of successful third-party API integrations and collaboration with external partners
Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to independently troubleshoot complex technical issues
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of clear articulation of technical concepts
Proactive attitude, strategic mindset, and ability to adapt quickly in a dynamic environment
Ambitious with strong values of collaboration, agility, and willingness to challenge the status quo

Core Competencies and Skills:

Proficiency in Java with extensive experience in building high-performance backend services
Familiarity with Node.js for complementary backend logic development
Deep understanding of databases such as MongoDB (document-oriented), ClickHouse (analytics), and Aerospike (key-value store)
Expertise in AWS infrastructure, including EC2, S3, and related services
Experience with containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, ideally using tools like GitHub Actions or Jenkins
Strong understanding of the OpenRTB protocol and real-time bidding processes
Solid experience with ETL pipelines, data logging (structured formats such as Parquet), and analytics/reporting
Proven experience with microservices architecture and modular system design
