Job Description

Role Overview: You will join the Department of Biology at the University of York as a full-time laboratory technician, working 37 hours a week during term-time only. Your primary responsibility will be to provide technical and scientific support in the Biology Teaching Laboratories. The role involves working in a team to facilitate practical activities for undergraduates, postgraduates, and other visitors, ensuring the smooth operation of laboratory areas. Key Responsibilities: - Provide daily technical support under the supervision of teaching laboratory managers - Maintain stocks, process laboratory waste, perform glasswashing, and conduct routine laboratory checks - Organize and manage the autoclaving and glass washing areas, reporting any issues and ensuring equipment functionality - Demonstrate knowledge of basic laboratory safety regulations and procedures such as COSHH - Prepare accurate documentation and perform practical tasks with attention to detail - Communicate effectively with staff and students, displaying good interpersonal skills - Manage your time effectively, work independently and as part of a team, meet deadlines, and support colleagues - Be flexible with working hours, as practical sessions may occur between 9am and 6pm Qualifications Required: - A level, HNC, or equivalent experience - Knowledge of basic laboratory safety regulations and procedures (e.g., COSHH) - Ability to prepare accurate, clear, and concise documentation - Ability to perform routine practical tasks with attention to detail - Good interpersonal skills and effective communication with staff and students - Ability to manage time effectively, work independently, and as part of a team - Dependable, reliable, self-motivated, and maintain a positive attitude towards others Additional Company Details: The Department of Biology at the University of York is renowned for its excellence in teaching and research, providing a supportive environment for staff and students to thrive.
