Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Surveillance and Monitoring

    • Monitor and track healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in patients and staff.
    • Conduct routine surveillance to identify infection trends, outbreaks, or emerging infection risks.
    • Review medical records and laboratory reports for patterns of infection.

Infection Control Policies and Procedures

    • Develop, implement, and update infection control policies and procedures based on national and local guidelines (e.g., CDC, WHO).
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and infection control protocols.
    • Recommend improvements to infection control practices within the facility.

Education and Training

    • Educate staff, patients, and visitors about infection prevention and control measures, including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE), and isolation protocols.
    • Provide training and workshops on infection prevention to new staff, clinical teams, and other healthcare professionals.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and modify as needed.

Infection Risk Assessment

    • Conduct assessments of patient care areas to identify infection risks and ensure environmental cleanliness.
    • Advise on infection control measures during patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
    • Participate in infection prevention risk assessments, especially in high-risk areas (e.g., ICU, surgical suites).

Outbreak Management

    • Investigate infection outbreaks and work with clinical teams to contain and control them.
    • Collect and analyze data to identify the source of outbreaks and trends.
    • Coordinate with public health authorities and regulatory bodies during outbreaks.

Data Collection and Reporting

    • Collect, analyze, and report infection data to hospital leadership and relevant health authorities.
    • Maintain accurate records of infection incidents and compliance with infection control measures.
    • Prepare reports and statistical analysis on infection rates, trends, and outcomes.

Collaboration

    • Collaborate with clinical staff, departments, and external agencies to ensure effective infection control practices.
    • Act as a resource for healthcare workers regarding infection prevention techniques and clinical concerns.
    • Assist with preparing infection control-related materials for audits or accreditation purposes.

Quality Improvement

    • Participate in quality improvement projects related to infection prevention and control.
    • Conduct audits and inspections to assess adherence to infection control guidelines.
    • Recommend corrective actions based on audit findings and infection control practices.

Regulatory Compliance

    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to infection control, including OSHA and Joint Commission standards.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of infection prevention regulations and guidelines.
