Position Summary As the Group Director of Software Engineering for Runtime Platforms at Walmart Global Tech, you will be at the helm of foundational platform transformation. This is a high-impact leadership role overseeing the design, development, and global delivery of Walmart's next-generation Runtime and Traffic Management platforms. You will lead a global team responsible for critical platform functionscontainer and VM management, configuration and secrets, and all ingress/egress traffic for Walmart applications. Your strategic and technical expertise will directly support business continuity, security, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction at scale. About the Team The Global Technology Platform (GTP) powers Walmart's digital transformation and is the engine behind every customer experience. The Runtime Platform (RTP) is core to this foundationenabling scalable compute, seamless deployment, secure traffic routing, and service observability across Walmart's multicloud environments. You will focus primarily on the Traffic Management team , which handles: Global DNS and API Gateway Software load balancing CDN, edge computing, and eBPF-based traffic optimization Routing and security policies at scale Handling 10M+ requests per second across Walmart's digital footprint This is a critical, highly performant system supporting mission-critical traffic flows for Walmart globally. What You'll Do Lead and grow an elite engineering team responsible for Walmart's global runtime and traffic platforms. Drive strategy and delivery of Walmart's container/VM orchestration, ingress/egress management, configuration and secrets storage systems. Define, evangelize, and execute on a unified traffic visioncombining routing, DNS, security, observability, and scalability. Collaborate with product, operations, security, and business leadership to align technology strategy with Walmart's digital goals. Architect and modernize a world-class traffic platform using service mesh, eBPF, software load balancers, and multi-cloud routing policies. Create a platform that supports dynamic traffic shaping (rate limiting, circuit breakers, segmentation, etc.) while improving latency, resilience, and cost efficiency. Establish high standards for availability, observability, automation, and disaster recovery. Lead platform engineering with a strong developer-first approach, ensuring self-service, reliability, and documentation. Convert CxO-level strategic goals into measurable engineering OKRs and deliver through strong governance and ownership. What You'll Bring 20+ years of engineering leadership with a proven track record of building and operating large-scale distributed systems/platforms. Deep experience in platform engineering, especially in traffic management, container orchestration (Kubernetes) , VMs , and networking . Practical expertise in: Cloud-native networking (GCP, Azure, AWS) Service mesh technologies (e.g., Envoy, Istio, Linkerd) TCP/IP, HTTP(S), DNS, Load Balancing Rate limiting, DDoS mitigation, routing optimization Edge computing and CDN architectures Prior success leading engineering organizations of 100+ , including senior architects and engineering managers. Strategic mindset with the ability to define and implement long-term vision across globally distributed teams. Ability to distill complex technical architectures for executive audiences and align cross-functional stakeholders. Strong focus on metrics, observability, automation, and operational excellence (including fast service restoration SLAs). Excellent communication, collaboration, and executive influencing skills. Prior experience contributing to or leading open-source projects is a plus. Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
