Department: Foundry / Metal Fabrication / Manufacturing

Reporting To: Production Supervisor / Shift In-Charge

1. Job Purpose

A Fettler is responsible for cleaning, grinding, smoothing, and finishing casted or fabricated metal components. The role ensures that all products are free from defects, sharp edges, excess metal, and surface imperfections before moving to the next process or final dispatch.

2. Key ResponsibilitiesMetal Finishing & Cleaning

• Remove excess metal, burrs, flash, and weld splatter from castings or fabricated parts.
• Perform grinding, sanding, filing, and polishing using hand tools and power tools.
• Clean and prepare metal surfaces for painting, coating, or machining.
• Ensure components meet required surface finish and dimensional standards.

Tool & Machinery Operation

• Operate grinders, cutters, chipping hammers, pneumatic tools, and sanders safely.
• Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
• Report any malfunction or maintenance needs to the supervisor.

Inspection & Quality Control

• Inspect finished parts for accuracy, defects, cracks, and rough edges.
• Ensure all fettling work adheres to quality and production specifications.
• Mark or segregate defective or non-conforming parts.

Safety & Housekeeping

• Follow all factory safety protocols, including wearing PPE (gloves, goggles, ear protection).
• Maintain a clean and hazard-free work area.
• Properly dispose of scrap metal and maintain cleanliness around machines.

Production Support

• Assist in loading and unloading metal components.
• Coordinate with welders, fabricators, and machine operators for workflow alignment.
• Meet daily production targets and report work updates to supervisors.

3. Qualifications & Skills RequiredEducation:

• High School / ITI / Technical Certification (preferred but not mandatory).

Experience:

• 1–3 years of experience as a Fettler, Grinder, or in metal finishing operations.
• Experience in foundry or fabrication industry is an advantage.

Skills:

• Good knowledge of metal finishing tools and grinding techniques.
• Ability to read basic instructions and follow safety standards.
• Good hand-eye coordination and physical stamina.
• Attention to detail and ability to identify defects.

4. Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for long hours.
• Ability to lift and carry metal parts as required.
• Comfortable working in noisy and dusty environments (PPE provided).
