Job Description

Role Overview

We are looking for an Engine Design Engineer with strong fundamentals in powertrain component design and hands-on experience in cranktrain, valvetrain, and transmission sub-assemblies. The role involves detailed 3D modelling, assembly design, engineering calculations, and releasing drawings through PLM systems. The ideal candidate should be capable of end-to-end design from concept, layout, tolerance analysis, to manufacturing support for engine and drivetrain components.

Key Responsibilities

1. Engine Component Sub-Assembly Design

  • Design and develop crankshaft assemblies, including counterweight optimization, bearing selection, and balance considerations.
  • Design camshaft assemblies, valve train layout, timing drive systems, and associated kinematics.
  • Create detailed models of gearbox assemblies, including shafts, gears, synchronizers (if applicable), and housings.
  • Develop differential assemblies, gear sets, carriers, and load-bearing components.
  • Design gear selector mechanisms, shift forks, detents, and selector shafts ensuring smooth shifting and ergonomic feel.

2. Engineering Documentation Drawings

  • Prepare detailed 2D engineering drawings with GDT, surface finish, tolerances, and critical-to-quality features.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up studies to ensure manufacturability and assembly reliability.
  • Release engineering deliverables through PLM (Windchill/Teamcenter/Enovia or equivalent).

3. Design Analysis Calculations

  • Perform design calculations for:
    • Shaft strength and deflection
    • Bearing life and selection
    • Gear tooth bending/contact stress
    • Cam profile and valve timing requirements
    • Lubrication flow considerations
  • Support basic FEA/strength analysis in collaboration with CAE teams.

4. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with manufacturing, testing, and quality teams to ensure design feasibility, cost optimization, and robustness.
  • Support prototype engine builds, validation testing, and troubleshooting for design improvements.

5. Continuous Improvement

  • Implement design standardization, modularization, and reuse of platforms for new engine and transmission variants.
  • Contribute to DFMEA and design review processes.

Required Technical Skills

  • Expertise in 3D CAD tools (Creo/SolidWorks/Catia).
  • Strong fundamentals in the design of:
    • Crankshaft assembly
    • Camshaft/valvetrain
    • Gearbox
    • Differential
    • Gear selector mechanism
  • Good understanding of engineering drawings, GDT, tolerance stack-up.
  • Knowledge of PLM systems.
  • Familiarity with design calculations related to powertrain components.

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and engineering judgement.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Good communication, documentation, and presentation skills.
  • Ownership, attention to detail, and time management.

Qualifications

  • B.E./B.Tech. in Mechanical/Automobile Engineering.
  • Knowledge of engine fundamentals and powertrain architecture is essential.
  • Experience with 2W/3W/4W engine design is an added advantage.
