1. Test Planning & Design
Understand source-to-target mappings (STTM), data models, and business logic implemented in ETL/ELT pipelines.Design and document test strategies, test cases, and test data for validating data ingestion, transformation, and loading workflows.Define entry and exit criteria for ETL/ELT testing cycles.Collaborate with developers to identify and cover both functional and non-functional test scenarios (e.g., performance, scalability, data latency).2. Test Execution & ValidationExecute ETL/ELT test cases against data pipelines across staging, curated, and semantic layers.Validate data correctness by comparing source data vs. target data using SQL queries or automated validation frameworks.Test data transformations, aggregations, joins, and business rules implemented in the ELT layer (e.g., Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks).Perform incremental load and full load validations.Test pipeline scheduling, dependencies, and job orchestration in tools like MWAA, Airflow, or Data Factory.Verify data quality rules such as null checks, referential integrity, and duplicate handling.3. Defect Management & ReportingLog and track defects using standard tools (e.g., Jira, Azure DevOps).Analyze root causes and collaborate with ETL developers to resolve issues.Retest resolved defects and ensure regression testing coverage.Provide daily/weekly test execution reports to stakeholders.4. Automation & OptimizationDevelop SQL-based or script-based automation for repetitive validation tasks.Use or configure data testing frameworks such as Great Expectations, PyTest, or custom SQL validators.Automate data comparison and reconciliation between source and target environments.Participate in CI/CD pipeline integration for automated data quality checks.Required Skills & Experience7 years of experience in ETL/ELT or Data Warehouse testing.Strong expertise in SQL for large-scale data validation and troubleshooting.Experience testing ETL pipelines built on tools such as:Exposure to Python or Shell scripting for automation.AWS MWAA (Airflow), Data Factory, Informatica, Talend, or dbt.Cloud DWHs: Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or Synapse.Good understanding of data warehousing concepts dimensions, facts, slowly changing dimensions (SCDs), star/snowflake schema, etc.Experience validating data from source systems such as Oracle E-Business Suite, SAP, or Salesforce.Familiarity with data lake / medallion architecture (Raw, Curated, Semantic layers).Experience using tools like Jira, Confluence, or Azure DevOps for test case management.
